RSX... Thoughts?
« on: September 18, 2009, 06:39:57 AM »
So I was given a Roto Grip RSX awhile back as a birthday present... it has a really long pin, I mean at least 5 to 5 1/2 inches.  With the pin being so long, my driller decided to put the pin two inches above and between my fingers, with the CG about a half inch from my Center Grip.  This ball is low RG, medium differential, which means this ball should be pretty early.  What I have found with my RSX is that it is very long, with a very sharp move off the breakpoint.  This ball gives me a nice angular look on the Medium-Heavy oil.  Even though its a solid, I'd be convinced that this ball was a pearl by the way it makes the transition down the lane.  Is this attributed to the extremely long pin?  Maybe the drilling?  I track pretty high, with my PAP being 5 3/4 over and 1/4 up.  So this drilling (by the naked eye) seems to be something along the lines of a 6 inch pin to PAP.  It rolls well when the shot is there, but it seems to be a little too condition specific.  I thought about altering the surface to give me a little more predictability, but I wanted to see if anyone else out there has done this... and if my experiences with this ball is pretty much one of a kind, or if someone has experienced the same thing I have.  Thoughts are welcome and most definitely appreciated.

On Edit:  Now that I have read the description of the RSX... it seems like my ball reaction isn't all that unusual, mine just seems a little extreme I guess.  Did this ball surprise you guys like this as well?

I have one that is stacked at 1000 ab and polish (shot my only 300 with this one) and one with a pin to pap of 6" with the pin above and a little left of the middle finger. The stacked one rolls hard of the dry in med to med heavy. The long pin version is all about getting way in when the heads are burned and making a corner. It just retains energy and bounces left in the back.

Some thoughts:
Long pin-CG balls, likes yours, tend to take longer to stabilize, that is, to get into a roll, compared to the same ball with a more "normal" pin, like 2.5 - 4". This sort of counteracts the lower RG concept. I'm kind of susrprised your driller put the pin so close to your track and so far over, unless you had fairly slow ball speed. At the 6" pin to PAP, it will be good for more broken down or blended conditions, rather than fresh or wet/dry conditions. Your long PAP usually but not always implies a fairly early rolling release, but he, your driller, should know your game better than strangers here.

If it is going too long before making its move, and if it still has its polished cover, you can haze the coverstock lightly with a green or a grey nylon pad to remove some of the shine. Do that lightly and test it on as normal a house or league shot as you can. If it's still too long, haze (roughen up) more of the shined area.
