11 pound Hustle Camo question
« on: March 04, 2023, 04:06:17 PM »
I want to get my wife a new ball and am looking at the Hustle Camo.  The 11lb. has no weight block.  Would this ball still hook on dry conditions for someone with very slow speed?  From what I've read in this site is that if a ball has no weight block then it won't matter where the pin is.  I assume this is correct.  Due to an injury this is about the heaviest ball she can handle right now.  Right now she's using an 11lb. Columbia Beast that has a weight block.  It is one the last balls made in Ky.  It hooks too much for her to control with her slow speed.  Her other ball is plastic. Any help would really be appreciated.  By the way, we tried the Twist and gave it away.  Only time I've ever seen a ball start to hook, then go straight and then back-up.

If the Twist didn't work, the Hustle isn't going to be any better.  In the 11lb weight, neither the Twist nor the Hustle have a weight block.

My senior Mom tried a Roto Grip MVP Pearl in 12lb.  It had a very basic bulb core, but not very dynamic.  She found that it just wouldn't carry.  It would go into the pocket, but just didn't have enough drive to carry.

If you want a dynamic 11lb ball, there is currently an 11lb Ebonite Turbo/R on eBay.  It has dynamics that are way better than a Hustle.

It's an X-out due to being 11lb 8oz, but drilling will remove a few ounces.  Might be worth a try if she can't throw 12lb.

The Turbo and Beast are essentially the same ball.  You are kind of stuck here as there are very limited options.  If you want less hook/more control you are going to have to go with Twist or Tropical Surge.  I know you said the Twist would hook and then go straight.  It is hard to really say without seeing her throw a shot honestly because with really slow ball speed it doesnt make sense how the Beast is too much and the Twist does absolutely nothing.  The Twist is still resin so any friction would make the ball have some reaction.  The pin still matters even if it does not have a core.  If you dont believe me, go take a house ball and put the ball on a ramp with the holes facing to one side of it and watch how fast the ball goes in the direction of where the holes are.  I have a 5 year old that still uses a ramp from time to time and when he put the holes on the side instead of setting the ball down with the holes facing straight up; the ball is already at the gutter by the time the ball gets 35-40 feet down the lane.  If the pin did not matter; he should be able to put the ball on the ramp and have the ball go straight down the middle of the lane with virtually no hook.  There is still top weight on a pancake weight block.  I am not sure where the pin was placed on that Twist but I would still have drilled it with the pin above the fingers, especially with the new static weight rules.  Even if the CG is above the fingers; you wont have more than 3 oz.  Something tells me he put the pin/CG in the middle of her grip.  But I could be wrong.

Could certainly be a layout issue.  It would be interesting to know what ball speed we are talking about here.  The only time I've seen balls hook, stop, then seemingly back up is when ball speeds are less than 7mph.

Thanks to all who tried to help.  Her speed it super slow.  The pin was placed above the ring finger probably about 4 1/2" from the pap.

Had an email from Brunswick and got about the same information.  Seems like the Twist is their only suggestion.  I did look at the Motiv Thrill in an 11 pound and while it has a weight block, I'm afraid it would also be too strong.  Probably too close to the Beast.

Anyway, thanks again.

Have you considered a 11# Storm Mix?

Thanks, I'll check on this one.  Is it Urethane?

Yes, Mix is urethane.  I bowled with a guy in his 90s that used a pin up Mix.  He threw the ball about 10mph and his Mix would cover a LOT of boards on a normal house shot.  He still needed plastic for his spares since the Mix would hook away from the corners.
