Sonic X as Spare ball?
« on: July 21, 2003, 08:35:59 AM »
Ok, this may seem like an odd question. Do you think it’s possible to use a Sonic X as a spare ball? I want to buy a Silver Streak Pearl and the Sonic X; I have a 6 ball roller and really don’t want to lug around a seventh ball. But, I really do need something for bone dry conditions, and the Sonic X seems to be the right ball. I figure if the houses I bowl at are normally medium condition shots, then I shouldn’t really have a problem. I just thought the Sonic X would make a cool looking spare ball also.

Thanks,
Josh

In theory, yes, a Sonic X can be used as a spare ball, given the correct conditions.

If you are accustomed to bowling on a medium-heavy shot where the Sonic X would just skate the entire 60 feet, then yes, it should be a sufficient spare ball.  Also, if you completely kill the hook on the ball to shoot at your spares (like I do with a Flipside Wild, RG and Diff very similar if not the same as the Sonic X) than you've effectively used two spots in your arsenal (dry lane and spare) with one ball.

However!  If you see a broken down shot, something that hooks at your toes and doesn't stop, and you choose not to kill the hook, then obviously a Sonic X will not work, a very shiny, polyester covered rock such as a White Dot or a Maxim would be your best choice.

A lot of this seems like common knowledge, but the only stupid question is the one un-asked.

I really like my Sonic X. But - I would not consider it a 10 pin ball unless it was an outrageously oily shot - one where my vis a ball would slide off into the gutter.
The Sonic X is NOT a dry lane ball - lots of people have that idea, but they're wrong. The ball hooks - just is not a monster.

My idea was to drill the Sonic X: 6 X 5 and polish it up to 2000 or higher. I mean flatting out my shot, really isn’t a problem for me.

Josh, the Sonic X is NOT a bone dry ball!!!!  And looks don't count when you're scoring !  Get a plastic ball and deal with it......you'll be glad you did.

Josh, why buy a Sonic X and make it into something it isn't ? See above....

Like I said, I can totally flatten out my shot and throw it straight. I was hoping with the Sonic X, I could kill two birds with one stone; using it as my Dry lane ball and spare ball. But, if that's not that case, then I guess I will drag around my plastic...LOL

Sorry to change subjects.

But....

I was wondering if anybody thinks the Silver Streak Pearl, will over lap with my Vendetta? I was going to drill the SSP like the C pattern on the drill sheet 4 x 4 (I think). I want the SSP to be very angular on the backend (skid flip), much stronger then my Vendetta is.

Pin half an inch above fingers, CG directly under ring. I guess putting the drill pattern would have been helpful...LOL

Josh, I just looked at your profile..what conditions are each ball for ??  A lot of med-heavy balls in there......this way I can make a recommendation on the Silver Streak Pearl.......

Jeff, I use my Vendetta for med/med-light oil. My Vendetta Particle is my med-heavy/heavy shot, and the Cure is more of my med-heavy carrydown ball. I have been using my Top Fuel as more of my normal league ball.

I want the Silver Streak Pearl, to replace my Top Fuel, as my leauge ball. I'm going to sand up the Top Fuel and use it as my med-heavy with dry backends ball.

OK, so...
Silver Particle Medium Heavy to heavy
Cure is Medium Heavy with Carry down
Top Fuel for medium heavy with dry backends
Silver Pearl for basic league shot
Vendetta, medium-medium light....

What is your Top Fuel drilled like.....I'd drill it like that, but if you want skid/flip, the stacked 4x4 is the way

Regarding the Sonic X for a spare ball...why not.  Anybody can kill the shot with even a particle ball and get away with it going pretty much straight.  My opinion anyways.  The Sonic X does get good length and if you were too kill the shot you wouldn't have any problem using it for spares.

Thanks,
