Odyssey vs Epic if same cover prep
« on: April 24, 2007, 03:19:44 PM »
My buddy picked up an Epic dirt cheap and would like it to roll like my Odyssey (OOB, clean through the heads, angular on backs)  Now I'm going to sand it to 1000 or 2000 Abralon (site says 2000 but some here argue that the Odyssey is 1000)  My question is how does the core on the Epic differ from the Odyssey?  Will I have to drill it stronger or weaker?  I have nailed the drillings on the Saga and the Odyssey, so I have a good idea on what to do.  I just want another opinion.

I see that the spin rate is 9s for the Epic and 5s for the Odyssey.   I assume that drilling it the same with the fingers deeper to shorten the spin time will work.  Anyone else?

the original EPIC is not as early as the odyssey. the epic loops the lane longer, mostly cause it is a taller core so it has less midlane.

Right the flare potential is the same, but the spin time is different, so my first instinct is to lower the spin time by taking some off the top of the core.

I have both as part of my arsenal.  They have identical layouts with the exception of the weight hole location.  The original is OOB, the Odyssey is at 2000 abralon.  I do not have a lot of games on my Odyssey yet, and I really believe that it takes a "breaking in" period to realize it's full potential.  However, I can tell you what I've seen so far.  The Odyssey, in my hands, is earlier than the Epic with a mellower backend move.  My original is longer even with the duller cover, but is more angular and finishes through the pins stronger.  I believe that this is because I have a ton of games on it, and also because of the weaker core.  Like I said my Odyssey hasn't been used enough to break in the cover, and I know that it will become stronger as I put more games on it just as my original did.  I used it at OOB before I changed it...it was super early and made a lightning-quick angular move on the back.  Just a ton of ball.

If you want it to be similar, you will absolutely have to drill it weaker.  I would only consider dulling mine to 800 (same as original) if I was certain I would be bowling on a flood.

I drilled my Odyssey pin at 5-1/4" from PAP above my bridge.  I added a weight hole 4" from the center of my grip.  Mass bias is on my VAL (I have found, though it doesn't make sense, that this is the most angular position of the mass bias for this core for me) Keeping the surface out of box this ball is one of the most angular dull balls I Have ever thrown.  Breaking in time has mellowed it somewhat, but it still clears the heads and turns the corner very well.
