Mercury and surface changes
« on: February 03, 2007, 04:53:38 PM »
I just got my mercury.  It is O.K., but seems to be a bit squirty.  I was wondering if anyone else has altered their mercury from the factory finish and, of so, what the effects were.

I was thinking about hitting it lightly ( emphasis on lightly ) with a green pad ( scotchbrite ) to get it to about a 1000 grit buffed finish.

P.S. No, I don't have access to abralon pads or anything better than automotive sandpaper or scotchbrites.  You would just have to be here and do business with the shop here to understand.

You might try a gray pad rather than a green one.  In either case, Roto covers take very well to changes, so feel free to experiment.  Worst case scenario is that you have to -- god forbid -- polish the Merc back up.

Another option would be to take it to a duller grit (500, etc.) and then add polish.

Hope this helps.

I've played with mine a little bit.  If you don't have access to Abralon, try 1500 wetsand first.  I have found that with this ball, regardless of sand finish, is squirty when polish is applied.
