Are High Dollar Balls Really Needed
« on: June 18, 2019, 02:32:48 PM »
I am of the opinion that high dollar balls are not needed on a typical house shot in bowling. I just purchased not to long ago a Hustle Ink and more recently a Hustle AU which are the only balls that I have needed or used in the last 5 weeks of senior league bowling. It is just a pleasure to throw these balls especially the Hustle Au. I am not a high rev bowler and I do bowl at a slower speed but I am probably more happy with what is in my bag than at any other time and more confident as well to what the equipment is going to do.

Since no two house shots are the same, I can't say no with any certainty. But I've used big balls with surface to control the move off of friction. Trying to attack certain fresh house shot with a shiny ball or mid-range ball is too over under for me, so I want the ball to bleed energy.

Now on a sport shot with volume, you may need a big ball. Period.
+1.

Concur, most house shots I encounter are very cliffed. Strong balls smooth out the friction and get up the hill in the puddle in the middle.

And, if you don't like the other team, allows you to wreck the shim and make their noses bleed when they have to move their left foot off the big dot.

From what I've heard, anyways. :)

yes they are, but not for everyone.

I bowl with a lot of old timers who use nothing but high end stuff to get the ball back to the pocket.  watching dudes just up 5 high end equipment averaging 210+...

so there's that.

as for me, i am normally throwing an after dark pearl up the ditch, but when too many people are on that line, i find comfort in getting deeper with stronger stuff and playing way away from everyone

so yes, there are definitely spots for it

Actually I prefer "bigger balls" on house conditions specifically because most are so wet dry, and the bigger the ball, the better it blends that usually.  I used a combo of Idol, Crux Prime, Phaze 2 (all lane shined) and Halo Pearl from 2nd-3rd arrow and averaged nearly 240 this season, and really could have used a Hyroad or Hustle Ink if I'd have wanted to.  BUT with over/under to begin with, and the transition that balls like that create, plus just generally rough transition on house shots anyway, the bigger stuff really muted the effect of transition and allowed me to stay in the pocket the vast majority of the time.  I used them lane shined as well so it wouldn't destroy my heads and mids, but still give me a good amount of control of the mids and backends.  I bowled a whole lot smarter this year, not necessarily better, and it really showed.

Depends on how you want to play the lanes.  Tweeners like me can often score well with tame low end bowls by going straighter down the oil line.   If I need to get in a little then I might want an asymetric to get some good recovery.   Best house shot balls I own are after dark solid and  honey badger.  Best dport shot balls are Phase 2 and Idol Pearl.

High dollar and ball strength are not always the same as well.  Buddies often has the strongest balls less than even a year ago for under $100.  Not going to name names but there are some middle of the road balls with nearly premium prices imo as well.

And I’d bet most of said balls are under the Brunswick umbrella.

Just picked up Quantum Bias for $120 so Viva Mexico I guess.

I dont think there is any correlation between price and performance.   Its about whether a ball matches up to a pattern for your game.   I have a 5 ball tournament arsenal that includes some so called high dollar balls and some cheaper balls down to a After Dark solid.  Not uncommon to hit a condition where the After Dark is the best option.  Also not uncommon to hit a Condition where my Phase 2 is my best option.  Probably several balls at either end of the price spectrum that would give  similar performance for me.
