Are High Dollar Balls Really Needed

I am of the opinion that high dollar balls are not needed on a typical house shot in bowling. I just purchased not to long ago a Hustle Ink and more recently a Hustle AU which are the only balls that I have needed or used in the last 5 weeks of senior league bowling. It is just a pleasure to throw these balls especially the Hustle Au. I am not a high rev bowler and I do bowl at a slower speed but I am probably more happy with what is in my bag than at any other time and more confident as well to what the equipment is going to do.

I think it all depends on the condition.  In a vacuum, yes they're "needed" as there are extreme conditions one can face in tournaments that require a Sure Lock / Crux Prime and those type balls.

But, since you specified in the OP on a "typical" house shot.....I don't really ever need too much more than a HyRoad/Hectic or at most something like a Hyper Cell Fused at 3000. 

The Hustles are plenty of ball for a loosely defined THS.

On a house shot I've never needed more than a mid-level ball.

On Leaning Tower of Pisa last night I needed my Absolute Nirvana to start and balled down for games 3 & 4 of league

It all depends on the house.  In most places, I can use my Sigma Sting/Tribal Fusion and have no issues with it.  But there are some places that use a high volume of oil where I have to go up to my No Rules Pearl Extreme/No Rules solid that I still use as needed.

Given this particular persons post history it definitely falls on his ability to perform.

If you wait a year to get this year's high dollar ball it will very likely be on the discontinued list and available much cheaper. Or, get last year's ball now.

it depends on the house shot; the term doesn't equate to the oil volume, but rather the ease of scoring.


You can have a house shot that is long and heavy oil; and still have the higher scoring pace

On most house shots,  most bowlers use equipment that is likely much stronger then what is needed.  Typically weaker equipment allows them to stay in a better part of the lane longer and make smaller moves then most of the stronger bowling balls.

Since no two house shots are the same, I can't say no with any certainty. But I've used big balls with surface to control the move off of friction. Trying to attack certain fresh house shot with a shiny ball or mid-range ball is too over under for me, so I want the ball to bleed energy.

Now on a sport shot with volume, you may need a big ball. Period.

Concur, most house shots I encounter are very cliffed. Strong balls smooth out the friction and get up the hill in the puddle in the middle.

All depends on the THS condition and the bowler's style. I tend to carry a big ball, a medium and a small ball.

Yes, it is agreed that I could use the smaller weak piece and score fairly well right along with others playing on the lanes, but usually on the fresh shot, I'm going straighter with a big  piece to properly break the lanes down right, and SCORE at the same time.

I then move in and ball down accordingly. But that's just me!
