Best Dry Option
« on: December 04, 2013, 05:06:36 AM »
I'm currently thinking the Uproar for a dry lane fried up last ditch effort before breaking out the plastic kind of ball.  I generally bowl on wood, and there's usually plenty of oil, but when they fry, I have an issue getting the ball to not hook before the 30 foot line, I currently have a Totally Defiant, 2 Defiants drilled differently, a Profit, Versa-Max, and a pursuit at my disposal.  The Versa-Max has is my current last ditch effort ball, but it hooks to early when it's dry.  I'm adding a Hyper Cell to the bag, and might have a chance to add a second ball.

Come January, I can see my 3-4-5 ball bag carrying:
Hyper Cell (Pin Up, thumb kicked out about 23-26 degrees)
Totally Defiant (Pin Up, thumb is kicked out 23 degrees)
Defiant (Pin out, Double thumb)
Uproar (Not sure, but talk with driller about drilling)
Crown

I'm not opposed to putting another brand in the bag, but so far, Roto has been pretty good off my hand.   I was suggested a Wrecker, but am afraid that'll be too much ball for the spot I want to use it.  I think the Deranged would be too much ball too.   I could go something like a Blue Hammer or Natural.   Most of all, I like the balls that go long, without TOO much early grabbing.

Based on what you now have, you might consider a RotoGrip Shout.
14lb 15.5 mph at pins 325 Revs. Silver Coach, Ball Driller. In Bag:  Storm Pro-Motion, Hyroad X, Matchup, Code Red.

First of all, all of those are some pretty strong pieces. What kind of condition are you going to be playing on, generally? I know you mentioned "fried dry lanes" but with the pieces you already have, I tend to believe you are not actually playing on fried conditions.

I know that a Roto Shout will work on true fried conditions because guys use it regularly in my Tuesday nite, dry league. Knowing RG like I do, I would tend to guess that the Uproar will be a bit stronger than a Shout.

P.S. Are you speed dominant?

I typically see a heavy oil condition.  I am hoping to be in a position in the somewhat near future to be able to go play some tournaments and want to have an arsenal prepared.

I kind of figured you play on some serious oil! Well, the tournies that I go to require me to take a three ball arsenal of dry lane pieces as well. One pin up, one label leverage and one rico'd.

A label leveraged Shout might be all you need for the future, but check with your normal driller since he knows you best!

Gotta agree with the other posters on a Shout. Actually the Shout and Scream make a nice 1-2 combo for dryer and shorter patterns.

You mentioned in your comments that you like balls that "push" quite a bit on there on. You would love a Deranged! I routinely get to throw this on my Thursday night condition because it naturally pushes thru the dried mids with nice smooth roll at the breakpoint.

Of the balls that are available now...

The 900G desert hook is the weakest cover/core ball on the market that I have tried.

Much weaker than a slingshot.

My dry arsenal currently goes in order -

Lane Masters Hornet - (No longer sold)
900G Desert Hook
Storm Super Natural
Pink Hammer (90's - no longer sold)
XXXL (no longer sold)  plastic w/ core  (current models available from Hammer)

The slingshot and I would guess the roto grip options being mentioned are stronger than the above.  so it depends on how dry your talking about

A couple of posts ago someone mentioned a few balls, some no longer sold......however ebay has an undrilled 16 pound pink hammer, and a 15 pound used pink hammer. Also, there is a 15 pound used lane 1 xxxl for sale and a 15 pound used lane masters hornet currently on ebay.

If you want something on the dry side of things, I will throw in the visionary Green/blue centaur........most of the people who have used that ball love it---however I was one that used it and didn't like it....but that was before I truly learned that I don't match up well with lower differential cored balls(in general)..there is a NIB 15 pound green/blue centaur currently on ebay...I'd say go for that if 15 is your weight.

Well, considering the weakest ball he has is a Versa Max, I am guessing most feel he may not need to jump that far down.

To me, it seems it is a combination of too strong of a ball/layout and not knowing/trusting where to play.  Too many people think they have to get the ball to the dry on the outside of the THS to be successful..... or maybe it is me.

Don't worry, they'll show up, with their feet firmly planted on the "big dot".

I drilled up a Columbia scout  with PBA spare ball layout  this gives you a polished reactive ball weak cover with a pancake weight block this ball is at the entry level  price
