Bleeding Grenade
« on: June 14, 2010, 11:46:32 AM »
I got my Grenade on release day and threw about 5 games with it on a very dry pair of lanes.  The ball would come back with no oil rings on it at all and the ball was great on that kind of condition.
I read it somewhere about the bleeding of urethane balls, but why does this happen?  The ball was brand new, threw only a few games on dry lanes, I still wiped the ball before every throw (part of the preshot routine thing) and went home and cleaned it with a cleaner.  The next day I pulled the ball out of my bag and it looked like it was covered with oil.  So I cleaned it again with the cleaner and put it back in the bag.  A couple days later I checked it again it it was again covered with oil, so again, I cleaned it.  Today, same thing.
So, being that I threw this ball for only a few games on dry lanes, is this oil that was actually sucked up or is this something in the urethane or something totally different?

Thanks for the replies guys.  Ok, so it's bleeding color pigment. I thought it was some kind of oil because it felt kind of slippery like light oil, and when I clean the ball, there is no blue on the towel.

It's the exact same situation as the Naturals and acording to the Storm rep i asked about it as Darth has said it's the dye bleeding out of the ball

Email the fine people at storm, and they can explain it better for you.  It's not exactly bleeding oil, but there will a small amount of oil released only after 5 games.   It has more to do with color pigments and plasticizers being released.

But (I thought) plasticizers were what converted urethane into reactive resin. That would imply (as I suspected all along) that this coverstock (and the Natural's) was a resin/urethane blend, not true 100% urethane.

I think it has a tad bit of resin in it.  You can't get a straight answer from the Storm reps about it.

You must remember that urethane isn't produced the same way it was in lets say 1986, so the chemical composition will be somewhat different.  Does it have a tad bit of resin in it, I do know for sure, but I sure think so.

As do I.

Betcha the AMF Hype Urethane is 100% urethane!

Below is the answer from the fine people of Storm

Hello Carl,

Thank you for contacting Storm and for your support.

This is caused by the ball still curing….it is some of the material that is used to make the ball that doesn’t fully cure all the way.  Unfortunately this is just how urethane is but it doesn’t affect the performance of the ball.

Thank you,

Mike Sargent

We are a year into this coverstock now since the Natural was released.

Yes, it bleeds.

Yes, it's became obvious this is a unique coverstock that isn't really traditional urethane. ( With the Grenade they're calling it Retrothane )

But the stuff rolls like traditional urethane or better, and the surface is very fine tunable. ( I love this stuff polished )

I would love to see them put this stuff over the Cell core. That ball would be a house shot monster!

So how long does it bleed?  Will it stop after a month, or keep bleeding for a long time?

I reallydon't see it as a problem since all you got to do is wipe it off and you're good to go.

Got this ball last week, used it one day to practice, then bowled league and won money!
So bleed or no bleed, I love this ball!

The bleeding is simply some residual Plasticizers that are still in flux in the material. Some of these plasticizers are from the dyes used in the material and a small percentage is left from the urethane itself.

It is reminiscent of the “bleeder” yellow dots from the late 1970’s. That was also caused by the bleeding of the plasticizers from the dyes used in the materials. Over time it will stop bleeding based on usage and cleaning regimens.
