watched someone else throw the cell
« on: February 25, 2008, 12:10:44 PM »
i watched another bowler in my area throw the cell last night. ths, xmas tree probably buffed to 39 feet. the shot was tighter than usual i was using my odyssey playing more inside than usual. Standing 25 playing 17 out 10 to 5or so this is tight for me but the odyssey worked good.
The guy i am talking about I consider to be one of the better bowlers in our league considering avg.and high potential for the big game so i was intrigued to watch him throw the cell on what for me was a very manageable shot. His ball was polished over box i dont kow his specs but the ball was drilled similar to mine except it was stacked leverage,(pin under ring cg and mb in line with mb just right of thumb in strong position). What i saw just let me know that i am not crazy.
Over under tremendous finish with lackluster carry. 7 pin 10 pin 1 3 6 just a barrage of inconsistency that made him look like less than a 204 bowler. It sure looked good going down lane though. Nothing looks better than good carry and my odyssey really made me not miss my cell, and watching him struggle so bad with his. there was plenty of oil for the ball on this shot with his surface prep. I guess it didnt match up for him either.

I wonder if he got arrogant and decided he could use high gloss polish over 2000 grit - it could make any ball very sensitive. first try 4000 grit matte/no polish; if that's still too early, then try something like 600 grit or 800 grti plus a light coat of polish. He outsmarted himself with that polish. He might as well have tried sanding a White Dot to 600 grit and use that.

Blame the bowler, not the ball. The right surface/finish is everything.

No No No, its ALWAYS the ball, the bowler should only have to set it on the lane outside of the head pin and it shall strike!

Hahaha, I litterally saw a guy at a tournament this weekend that was ALL OVER (much like myself thank you very much, I was WAY OFF) and was swearing at the ball.  He had just drilled a shift, and decided it was junk and offered to give it to me by the end of the day, I just suggested he try some different surfaces and try it again.  It was pretty entertaining actually, if I had the same mentality, I would not have had a ball left to take home with me.  I sucked and I knew it, he sucked and couldn't live up to it.  So the ball took the blame

Sounds like he chose the wrong surface prep and/or the wrong layout.  I dislike stacked drillings to begin with because they force me to throw the ball a certain way.  Too much side roll and it's over/under all over the place (probaby was that "better bowler's" problem)  and when you try to utilize more forward roll, you better have oil in the front or a ton of speed otherwise it won't push.  IMHO, it's a bad layout and surface preparation choice, especially if that's the only house he bowls in.

I've considered drilling a Cell, but I don't think there's a center in Tucson with enough oil for it.  I could try it with a length drill and polish, but that kind of defeats the intent of the ball.

Gotta love it when people blame the ball for bowling bad.

I put the last of my Beans polish on my Cell yesterday. I love how it works on my Saturn, and figured I'd give it a try on the Cell.

Bad mistake. 4000 with the polish made it jump like a scared rabbit. Way too touchy for me to control. The ball would actually wiggle as it went towards the pins.

Is there an easy way to remove the polish myself at home ???

The recurring issues I have seen so far with the people who have had problems with the Cell is:

1. Drilled with pin under fingers and  2.MB kicked to close to VAL. (From the pictures posted in another thread)

I cannot believe people expect a big backend with this layout...

Eventhough, as mentionend in original post the mb was near the thumb; why on a THS would you put the pin low.  Other companies balls might need the help but this one does not.

PBA Experience league very good bowler tried throwing an aggressively drilled Cell with box finish on a hooking Chameleon pattern was having the same problem as mentioned above.  He got run over by a guy throwing a Saturn why??? Sometimes the ball is too strong for the pattern and will burn up too soon. If you are going to throw this ball on a THS drill it with the pin high.

toomanytenpins,

For gosh sakes please read up on what bowling balls do and how layout and surface work with ball reaction.  The biggest mistake a lot of bowlers make is they use a ball that is way too strong in both core and cover and they expect a ball to make up for their lack of technique.  PLUS take a lesson.....

204 is considered a good bowler wow i thought i sucked too, i hate to break it too most true 204 bowlers including me have alot of release mistakes and not that good.

I still like the Cell and have saw all the Cell wanted posts, not going to sell it anytime soon. Maybe you should dump it now and recoup your dough while it is the hot ball still???

I'll probably be picking up a Cell tonight.  I got a free ball for designing the local pro shop's website.  (If you know anyone that needs a site, tell em to look me up...here is the latest site I did www.getagrippro.com)  Anyhow, I plan to let him decide how to lay it out, though I will push for a standard pin up drill, as I've heard this ball doesn't need layout help for strength.  Should I mess with the surface on it?  Honestly, I never tough the surface of my equipment.  I don't have a spinner so it's too much of a hassle to experiment.

Pin up on the cell is going to react much quicker to friction, the strong cover and core is very fast transition. For most people it will not be flippy but a very strong arc, to smooth it out go under the finger line.

I have mine polished right over box i do not see the over/under problem discussed on this thread. Mine is pin over ring and mb in the assymetrical flip position which is in the 5 inch mb to pap area.

I'm a speed dominant player, if it makes any difference.  Just by speed alone my ball won't read early, for the most part.

Hi,
Everyone has hit some points on the Cell...I have one too and had to make some changes to the coverstock....1st of all lets call the Cell for what it is.. a very strong midlane reactive bowling ball...with that said the strokers(of which i am) will have a very hard time throwing this ball OOB up the track area as it will burn up way too soon...i took mine up to 4000 abralon then just touched with a rag that already had polish on it...much,much better...on  freshly oiled lanes...problem with strokers on this ball is if you move left of 25 and stay in the oil too long, the ball will slid too much due to its reactive coverstock and further more the continous roll on the ball will not snap back to kick the 10 out so my conclusion is for sure get the ball with the pin high and/or polish the ball and try to play right of 20
