Cell death?
« on: November 01, 2008, 02:26:49 AM »
I know I'm going to hate myself for asking, but here we go.... All you "clean it more" and "it's my fault" guys get your fingers ready... I'm really looking for the rest of you, the ones who are out there thinking "I thought I was the only one"...

I love my Cell. It's my favorite ball of all time. Last year I got it 6 weeks before the end of league.. It truly and literally saved my season. When nothing else would bend, the Cell came through, and the hit was awesome...
But now, at about 40-45 games, it's terrible. I use Clean and Dull every 6 games ("3 game" cleaners, there's your opening....) It rolls up to the pocket weakly and just hits like a wet noodle ("it's my fault" robots, there's your chance).

Now, for those non-liberals among us who read the facts, try the following...
1. Same league, same shot.
2. Every other ball in my bag is cleaned on the same schedule.
3. No other ball is reacting different than last year including my Vertigo, Total Inferno, and Special Agent plus others.

Let me repeat again... I love my Cell, but it needs to last longer... (Oops, "200,000 games on mine" people, here's your chance)

Constructive comments appreciated, just read through all the crap I know I'll see from the double digit IQ crowd...

Any ideas? Others?

Also beeing a very porous ball a hot water bath will probably help also. I have to do that with my No Mercy Beaten about every 40 games or so. With todays coverstocks they just soak up the oil.

get a big ceramic pot, put the ball in it, fill it with cat litter and let it sit in the oven at the lowest temp it will go, taking it out and cleaning it in a hot soapy water bath every 15 minutes

So you only want to hear from people who had their Cell die on them? Just to clarify before anyone tries to help you figure out why it's "dead".

Along the lines of what has already been said take it and scuff it up a little then give it a hot water bath and then resurface back to box condition.  40 games is about right with the coverstocks now it is about right.  I think your cleaning schedule works just add hot water bath in monthly or something similair depending on how much you bowl.

Thanks for the tips. I'll give it a try. Definitely would like to get this beastie back in form.

Yes, I've put it back to box, and did try differente surfaces. I'll accept the possibility that it soaks up much more than the Special Agent and Vertigo. Worth a try to see....
Thanks.

My Cell actually absorbs less oil than anything I have other than my plastic ball.  The oil rings actually sit on the outside of the ball for a moment instead of just soaking in immediately.  My Special Agent soaked up oil much, much more quickly.

LOL...I couldnt have posted it better !

You'll get the same 1 guy that says, well I clean my ball every 3 games and it has 1,000 games on it, so it must be you. Reading that guys posts are like watching old people bowling...boring and typical..lol

My buddies Cell died after a month. resurfacing, cleaning, oil extraction, nothing worked. RotoGrip replaced it with a Grand Illusion (it is what he wanted), lol.

Man, you gotta clean it every 3 games! Resurface it every 30, and rejuvenate it or give it a hot water bath every 60!!!!

GEEZ! No wonder your equipment dies! You might as well be keeping it in a bucket of unchecked oil on the off-season, you irresponsible loser!

My cell has 2 billion games on it on super duper heavy oil and it still hooks. In fact, it hooks more now than ever thanks to the hardcore cleaning regiment I maintain.

Ugh. Those people are ridiculous.

I'm sorry, but with the advancements in today's game, we have to face the facts: bowling balls die. With every shot, oil is absorbed, dirt clings to the ball surface, and the reaction death can only be slowed, not stopped.

As far as the death of the ball goes, however, I would definitely try a hot water bath or rejuvenating to bring back a little of what it once had.

I have had mine for about 8 months.  I have done minimal upkeep and it still rolls like a champ.

One more point that is out of your control:  Is the pattern REALLY the same?

One thing we had happen this summer at our center is an unknown change in a mechanical oil application setting (set screw losened up accidentally) made the first load be applied at the ARROWS, not at the foul line.  We saw either the ball was grabbing so quick that it spun out and didn't have anything left down lane or if we got it through the front there was too much of a cliff at the end of the pattern to get the ball to roll back.

Just a thought from something we saw here.
