Short Patterns, which ball works for you?
« on: May 19, 2008, 08:53:01 PM »
With a lot of Euro and World Tournaments now using the long/short format im in need of a decent short oil Arsenal for our qualifying events.

The patterns that are played are similar to the PBA Cheetah Pattern but generally shorter. In the region of 32-36ft.

Conventional wisdom says you will be looking for a medium to low differential ball to stave off over/under, eg. the Elite Cheetah ball is 2.54/0.032. In addition a mellow cover would retain energy better too.

Im going to try building an arsenal with 2 or 3 Mercs, which are 2.61/0.028. Id rather the rg was lower, but the core and cover match what i want pretty well. The Neptune has just a little too low a differential for my revs, bearing in mind on a short pattern i dont want to be hitting the ball very much anyway.

Im planning on using 2 drilled the same with the same cover prep, with differently place balance holes. (One ball also seems naturally slightly weaker than the other). Then have a 3rd with a similar layout but lower pin, and a very slight amount of surface. All the balls will be drilled roughly 4.5x4.5.

Has anyone else got much experience playing the twig on short patterns, and if so what equipment setup did you use.

How often do most of you play long and short patterns?

If you can track one down I liked the Mercury on short patterns. Otherwise take a look at the Neptune. I have found that if you can get two balls with about the same drilling on them with 7 boards difference between them you can just got back and forth at those tournaments.

I don't know if you can use them on your circuit, but I love the Visionary B/G Centaur.  Solid cover so it's not flippy or overly sensitive to the dry, high RG (2.61), low differential (0.015).  The cover isn't super strong and is easily adjustable.  Box is 1000 but still offers more length than you'd think.  I like mine between 1500 and 2000 with no polish.

Depending on whether you can find one or not, the pearl urethane Slate Blue Gargoyle might be another option.

For me, the Venus. I dislike it on everything else, but it's always worked well for me on short patterns, so I'm keeping it exclusively for that. Not played on any in a while though, unfortunately.

Locke - Merucrys is what dave was talking about when he said "Mercs" - I've just drilled a 2nd and 3rd one for him

mm2004 - your right about polished stuff, i find the same... but using a mystic/horizon for me would be waay to much ball, and for daves speed they are waaaay to much ball!

For me the low RG/low differential stuff works the best... and my next ball to try will be an axis drilled ball!

Most of the low diff. balls on the market are high RG though, how do you combat that? Thanks.

Lower Pin layouts in the 4" to 5" range, 2000 and 4000 grit abralon finishes.

I drill for a higher rev rate, lower speed player that has been throwing RotoGrip exclusively since the Top Fuel and Sonic X days.

His favorite two balls in a house with a shorter THS pattern with flying backends are an Illusion I drilled 4" pin, 1" above the midline, hit with 360 grit abralon and rough buff with a weighthole on his axis.  This Illusion flares alot early but does not change direction early.  It's the perfect read on a shorter pattern for getting the ball to "roll" out of the end of the pattern and make a continuous move rather than the ball snapping out of the end of the shorter pattern and being too strong off the spot.

The second ball is a Neptune I drilled 5" Pin to axis, 1.5" above the midline and a flare increasing hole 2" past his PAP for a stronger/smoother read late down the lane.  I knocked off the factory polish with 360 abralon, then went up every grit until I got back to 4000 grit abralon and applied no polish.  This ball coasts up the lane when he wants to hook it on the shorter pattern, but has enough strength to turn the corner and be continuous.

#1 rule on short & overreative patterns is coverstock surface is key.  Second would be pin height above the midline.  1-2" above the midline will stop the "high RG look" which is a ton of distance and strong jerk down the lane.  Third is giving yourself alot of angle away from the pocket, which most of the time will lead you to playing angles further outside on the lanes.  Making adjustments through transition front to back instead of side to side will also make things alot easier for you.  What I mean by that is, staying in the same zone, making hand position changes(up the back vs, 45 & 90 degree rotation), and speed adjustments (firmer vs softer).  Combine all of these and any short pattern becomes ALOT easier.

Yeh, thats the problem...

what I did do though is make a list of virtually all balls, with their RG and Diff, and add these to gether to get a list of balls with their max RG, and find the one with the lowest... this means that if i drill with a pin-cg distance of say 6" it will still have a very low RG (below 2.5) but a very low differential because of the drilling.
