cell layout
« on: February 20, 2008, 01:26:59 AM »
Just got my new cell minutes ago and can't wait to get it drilled up tomorrow. My question is which layout would be the best for me. I am a med to low track player with med-high revs and med speed. I want the cell to have a strong continius hook. i am trying to stay away from skld/flip

4 x 4 with 2 1/2" pin buffer gives the reaction you want.  I works outstanding for me and ask a lot of the guys and they've at least drilled on like this.

I would agree on the layout. Also, I think it would be tough to get this ball to skid/flip.

Hey blackburn,

If you have a lower track, reduce your pin to pap distance.  The recommended 4x4 is a very good standard but does not necessarily apply to all.

If you can provide your pap, I'll try my best to help.  I've drilled a few (from high roll to spinner) and it does make a difference, thanks.

Blackburn, I am very similar to how you describe yourself.  Mine is layed out this way and I love it!

sorry to piggy back ,but ,my pap is 4and 5/8x1/2. My cell is set up with 4 in pin to pap with cg at 40 degrees, puts the pin just right and under ring and the mb is about 3 inches right of thumb. I have an odyssey with the same set up except its 45 degrees. the odyssey works fine and the cell is ,well, its nothing like what any of you have said. Could it be too strong for me? Even polished it was pretty much blah. I am a lower speed lower rev bowler. I drooped to 15 to increase speed but it seems like now i throw the 15 pounders to strong . When i find a shot where i can get it to the pocket i get more corner work than a crack _ _ _ . Ten pins and seven pins for days. I am just really tired of reading all these glowing posts about a ball that i have that doesnt even remotely resemble any of your comments. I am not a great bowler but i am not that bad . so i am just curious have i set it up to strong for my game, would moving the pin over the bridge and bringing the mb in towards the thumb make the ball more playable for me,or is it just another bad match ,I am not whining and there have been many of you that have tried to help and it sounded like i was blowing you off ,i wasnt its just frustrating .I am sure there will be that old get a coach comment ,but i dont truly believe that my lack of success with this or any particular one ball means i need a coach. if i never shot a game over 220 with any ball i have ever thrown i might agree but my avg. is over 190 and i have shot over 220 on a few occasions. I have thrown more than 1 strike in a row once or twice. so yes i could benifit from a coaching session or two ,but its not going to change how this ball rolls as compared to other stuff i am throwing.

I'm willing to bet your layout is not right for your style.  It sounds like you have the ball drilled to roll really early.  You have a pin down layout which promotes earlier roll.  You have the MB kicked toward your VAL which also promotes earlier roll.

Now if you have slow ball speed and low revs then chances are your layout is just causing the ball to expend a lot of it's energy early on the lanes which is probably causing suspect carry!

I would of used a different layout based on your style.  I would of went with a pin up layout to promote a bit more length since you have slow ball speed.  I would of also placed the MB closer to your thumb to delay the roll a bit because of your slower ball speed.

tomanytenpins, you had said in an earlier post that you were sending this ball back to Roto Grip for them to check the ball out, did you not do that?
