Cell Pearl vs. Nomad Pearl vs. Storm Reign
« on: October 19, 2009, 10:20:02 AM »
Lately there has been an oil shortage on the lanes I bowl on and by the end of the 1st game each league night my Cell pearl is hooking too early.  I'm a power bowler and normally I can just jack up the ball speed a little when the lanes start to dry but that's not working now so I need something that will get farther down the lane.  I've thrown a couple of balls in the planet line and they didn't really fit my style (or lack thereof).  I'd like to find something with a similar reaction to the Cell Pearl but with more length.  I'm a die hard Roto fan and have been thinking about getting a Nomad Pearl but I was told that it was stronger than advertised and would be too close to my Cell Pearl.  I've also thought about the Storm Reign but it may be too close to the Cell Pearl too.  My question is, have any of you thrown both Cell Pearl and the Nomad Pearl or Reign with similar drillings and if so how did they compare?

I have a Cell Pearl and a Storm Reign and they are completely different in reaction.   My Cell has a ton of midlane for a pearl ball and I have a verl weak drilling on it(6" pin to pap) whereas my Reign(5.5 pin to pap) has much less midlane and gets down the lane a few feet farther then makes a unbeleivable turn left for me.
If I get my Cell Pearl into the dry too early it seems to roll out on me due to it being a stronger pearl.  The strength comes in handy when I keep it in the oil longer as it reads the lane nicely and rolls nicely into the pocket for nice hit and carry.
When I get the Reign into the dry too early it doesn't roll out but seems to get just enough length and then explodes.  I am not sure if it is possible to miss wide right with this ball, it will come back from just about anywhere.  Now hearing that you might think that it hates oil but that is not the case, it really tends to act like my Cell Pearl if I keep it in the oil more.
I do not think you will regret getting a Reign and I am not trying to take anything away from the Nomad pearl, I am sure it is a great ball as well but the Reign has a slightly higher rg(to help get it down the lane farther) and less flare which is why I chose it over the Nomad.

I have a Nomad Pearl and a Cell Pearl, they both are very quick off the dry with the Cell Pearl being stronger overall, if your looking for something like the Cell Pearl then the Nomad Pearl is the ball, mine rolls just like my Cell Pearl but its just weaker in all aspects.

You would be better off with a Fast. The Nomad and Reign are strong.

I know the Reign is somewhat strong but it clears the heads nicely.  I bolw on old wood lanes that are due for a resurface and they also have guardian overlays.  That means there is alot of friction!  The oil pattern is 40ft and my Reign is drilled pin over bridge with the cg stacked in the palm.  It goes longer than my AMF Villain and 900 Global Creature both of which have pins below the bridge and are highly polished.

I had the same problem as you with my Cell Pearl hooking too much for the lanes.  Actually it was more that it was hooking too early, the Reign fixed that problem.

I have both the Nomad and the Cell pearl and they definitely react different, even with the different lay outs.  The cell pearl is drilled with the pin above the bridge and the nomad is drilled with the pin below the bridge.  I think the Nomad is cleaner through the heads but that's not biggest difference.  The nomad is much more readable off the breakpoint. Once the lanes dry up, the last thing you want is a ball that reacts to dry too fast.  When my cell pearl checks up too early, the nomad compliments it well.  I just bump a little left (because of the earlier rolling lay out) and it reads the friction off the break point very well.

I would suggest getting a nomad with the pin up, maybe even the pin a little to the right, to make the ball "less snappy"

Hope that helped!
