Epic Battle: Initial Review - Pictures Inside - Video Soon

Hey BR & Roto-Kingdom,

Well, finally, my first Roto-Grip piece. I have been eyeing this ball for a long time and finally got a hold of one. (Thank you Allstarbowling-Joe).

Drill Pattern
4 x 3 1/8 x 4 1/4 MB

Weight Hole
Drill bit looks to be 5/8" and drilled 2 1/2 inches deep
Hole is drilled 5 1/2" inches over from middle of grip

I wanted a ball for heavier stuff (Medium Heavies & Up), but I didn't want it to burn up on me.
Wanted to give it some guts, so we decided on Pin 4 inches from PAP and put the MB @ about 60 degrees. This needed a weighthole to bring the side statics back to legal. I usually have stuff laid out with the pin at at least 4 1/2 to 5 inches from PAP, so this is a first for me in a long time.

Crossing my fingers!!!

Will test it out on AMF Synthetics tonight with the Usual Medium Oil, medium length and semi-clean backends. I will report back with my findings and see how it performs on our Thursday night league pattern.

Thanks to everyone in the Roto-Grip Forum that have helped with layout suggestions in the past few months =)

Hey everyone,

League last night was interesting to say the least. House has AMF synthetics. Oil was a little longer than usual this week and it was wetter in the middle portion of the lane. Backends seemed to be fairly clean, but not too crazy.


Lining up with the Epic Battle
Epic Battle during Shadow ball gave me a great look starting at 10 and staying behind the ball. If I got the ball in around 15 and swung it out, the ball would come up short and clip the head pin. If I stayed around 7-10 and went direct, I was in good shape. If I got the ball in a few boards around 12-13 boards at the arrows, I would get great hold and carry light mixers.

Motion of the Epic Battle
REVS! I have to say this ball revs a bunch off the hand. Is it the core? RG/Diff combo? I don’t know what it is, but this ball spins up quick. I also have to say that this ball is very responsive to diff hand positions. If I stayed up the back and rolled it, the ball was rolled very heavy and still had enough for the back. If imparted more side turn than usual, the ball traveled down the lane further and attacked the backend with a sharper angle. Pretty impressive.

Epic Battle & Pin Carry
So far so good. Pocket hits drove the pins back and ball had strong continuation. Light mixers seemed to make the pins move around a lot. Pretty forgiving and I felt a bit spoiled. I left 1 ten pin all night. Rare for me and I’m glad that I didn’t leave more! Carry with this ball helped me shoot my best set in a month. 279-221-218 = 718

Epic Battle – Handle Oil?
Being a light load particle, it gave the look of particle when you got it into the oil. When you hit dry, it seemed like a reactive. The best of both worlds. I am not used to a particle ball being strong off the dry. It gave me the luxury to have some tug room in the oil and not have it skate too much. It still had energy for the back. I see myself playing more direct/closing angles up with this ball when the lanes are wetter. I also wouldn’t mind hitting the surface with a green pad 600 for future floods.

Overall thoughts
On a medium-heavy blended out house pattern, this ball matched up great. Everything about the ball has been impressive so far. Better than average oil handling capability, predictable roll and carry.

First time using Roto-Grip and I am happy to say the least.
Great job RG. Looking forward to future releases.

Awesome review of the Battle Ramtart. I was very impressed last night witht he reaction you had. That ball is perfect for that type of condition. Anything heavy up front with backends is the Battle's strengths. Weakness will probably of course when the heads start to break down. I can't wait to see the video.

I love the Battle when there's enough head oil to keep it from rolling until about the 30-40 ft mark. Problem is I don't see that very often here in Tucson.     I guess I just need to get more comfortable playing further inside to be able to use this monster more.  My Saga is getting alot of play though with devastating results.
