Compliments to rocket ship
« on: August 27, 2016, 09:16:11 PM »
Im pretty dead set that I want to get a rocket ship. It seems like it's the perfect benchmark ball with a great reaction to start with. What other balls would you build around it for an arsenal? Higher or lower in both storm and roto grip line. I like the hywire, hustles, wreck it, snap lock. Not sure how any of those would fit. I currently have a wrecker but it's getting old so I will probably push that out of the bag with new stuff. Just wondering on ball ups and ball downs although I probably won't need to ball up as it looks strong and I bowl on old wood lanes.

If I were building an arsenal with Storm and Roto Grip balls focusing around the Rocket Ship this would be it:

Polyester (Pitch Black or Blue if you can flatten it out for spares)
Joy Ride
Hy-Wire (Street Fight could be another option for this slot)
Rocket Ship
Snap Lock
No Rules

I bowl on old wood Lanes myself.  Last year's arsenal is as follows: (note: I wouldn't be able to use a ship if I tried! They're that beat up in my neck of the woods)

HC skid
!Q fusion
Hyroad
Sky rocket
Scream

This year could easily be

Snap lock
IQ30
hyroad
Sky rocket
Loco solid (yep snagged one 8) )
In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]
*Now Testing* IQ Ruby, Renevant, another IQ Tour solid
Coming soon...???

Is the hy wire a step down from the rocket ship? I was afraid it would be really similar but I havent thrown one. The wreck it seems like it's way stronger than it was suppose to be lol. Billdozer this will be my first year at this alley, I've subbed here a couple times. Usually I bowled at a really updated synthetic house but I really wanted to bowl with my father in law so I'm bowling at this other house. Coor, I can flatten my hand out and shoot spares with any ball. I was thinking of a pitch just to have a weak reactive instead of no reactive lol.

I would say the Hy-Wire probably covers the same range of oil as the Rocket Ship if you're getting a ball to go over them, it's just gives a fairly different look.

If going for something that's a true step down is the idea then my choice would be a Hectic for that slot and then a Tropical Storm below it. Adding a Hectic and keeping the Joy Ride in there might create too much overlap. Going Rocket Ship - Sky Rocket - Joy Ride might work though. But a lot depends on how many balls you want in the arsenal too.

Yeah, if you're comfortable shooting spares by flattening your hand out I would definitely go for one of the Pitch balls.

The ship and the hy-wire probably cover the same amount of boards. But the ship is probably more even with more midlane, and the hy-wire is more so off the end of the pattern.

Well that's quite the gamechanger. You might want to wait and see how they play before making any arsenal decisions. I think it's fairly safe to assume that you will need stronger equipment than you thought but going the safe route is the best bet.

+1

I would definitely wait.  Typically when a center changes surfaces like this, even the first two weeks or so won't be the shot that ultimately gets put out.  I would get with the center once the season starts to try and get an idea of when they feel they have the shot figured out.

My center went from wood lanes (not resurfaced in 2 years) to synthetics and the Head Mechanic just threw out the wood lanes shot on the new synthetics.  Needless to say, that first week was tough.  The shot wasn't "set" until over 2 months had passed.  So you just can't tell what to expect until the center is done fiddlin' with the shot.

I bowled on synthetics the past 2 years. 42 ft med heavy pattern. Just switched to this new Center to bowl with my father in law and they just so happened to make the switch to synthetics this summer. Ultimately they'll get the pattern down and most houses are the same anyway

Compliments? Why hello there, Rocketship. Aren't you looking gorgeous today? But seriously, the Rocketship looks like an ideal benchmark ball. At first thought, a nice complement would be a Snap Lock. A SkyRocket would also make sense.
