Hey all, I just got back from the Eastern regional this weekend with my boy DP3 and we had a great time. However, I saw one thing that puzzeled me. While walking up and down the center I saw a national R/G staffer. Now I could say that his initials are B.L. or even say that his name is Brian Leclair, however for the sake of anonymity, I will not.
So I saw him throw the Horizon pearl and he had a decent look with it. Then came a switch to a purplish looking ball so naturally I think Venus. But wait, they were on Scorpion....so I take a look closer and see an S emblem on ghe ball...then a little man and then on NO!!! Storm Special Agent. Now how can this be I thought...he is on RG staff. So is RG letting staff straddle the fence now??

They are one company with rep's that sell both brands and the staffers i know get both brands now.
-
The staffer that I know only gets RG. He is on amateur staff. But why even have RG staff if your not going to require your guys to throw them. Thats pointless, when was the last time you saw someone throwing a Paradigm and it made you say...hmmm I want an Odyssey? Exactly, in my opinion I always thought that staff memebers we hired to get that company exposure.

They are the same company so i do not understand what you mean by your statement, there are different level's of staffers in amateur btw. Some get way more incentive money than the lower level amateur's.

This I understand, however you do not see Toyota, Scion, and Lexus boasting that they are the same company(There is seperation). They are different brands if you will. And what my point is, is that why say that someone is a staffer on RG but let them throw Storm. There are a lot of bowlers out there that don't know RG is under storm. And I know about the different level of amateurs, but why limit the amateurs and not the pros??

My Proshop owner is on Storm Regional staff. When Storm bought Roto Grip he was allowed to throw both Storm and Roto Grip. I know this sounds weird because people who are own Ebonite staff aren't allowed to throw Hammer, Columbia, or Track. I think this is good because it gets both companies recognition. I am sure that the bigger reps aren't allowed to throw both though. Pete Weber and Norm Duke are only allowed to throw Storm. I am not sure if it is because they get payed big money compared to Brian Leclair, but Brian is allowed to throw both.

Then why are Scion's sold at the same dealership as Toyota. All though Lexus has their own dealerships. But how many Lincon/Mercury dealerships do you see and most Chrysler dealerships that I see also have Jeep.
But maybe it is in his contract that he can throw Storm and RG. Since they are both under the same umbrella, that is why he was able to do that. I can see if the guy threw a Storm ball and then switched to Big B or Hammer. But the same company owns both, so it is not a problem.
FBM it probably does not bother him all that much. It is just one of those things that he is trying to understand. I know that I was in a restaurant for lunch on day. Everytime they set someone down, they would move a cup to another area at the end of the rows of booths. The entire time I ate, I wondered what it was for. I finally asked a waitress and it was simple. They were tryin to make sure that everyone had equal amount of people to wait on. Once I found out, I was able to finish my meal. But until I found out it bugged me. That is probably all he is trying to do is figure out why this bowler is able to throw both products.

True indeed, it doesn't "bother" me. Just doesn't make sense to me 'tis all, it doesn't sound like a good business strategy to me. But heck what do I know. But think about this....Storm and RG are under the same umbrella, but RG didn't pay to have there stuff usuable on tour(shows) last year. Why fork out the dough now when there is a chance that your ball will never even be showcased by your own staffers if they make it on tv?? Or maybe the clause if there is one, just requires them to throw RG on telecasts...

Actually, it makes sense to have him throw both. Brian and Tommy Delutz became exempt using Roto but weren't allow to throw them nationally because Roto wasn't registered. I believe Tommy became a free agent and Brian was with Storm (he at least through all Storm at the US Open and Country Club). However, since Roto can still be thrown at the regional level, you get cross advertising by allowing him to throw both. At PBA National stops Storm gets full exposure. At regionals, Roto and Storm gets exposure. A win all around for all parties.
Now if Roto pays the registration fee this year, he may be restricted to just Roto.

Roger can correct me if I'm worng...
Since Roto Grip is going to be registered on the national tour this year when Kretzer and Leclair start the tour season thay will be Roto exclusive.
Since Roto Grip was available to be used in regionals and PTQ's a lot of guys threw both but then went Storm only when they made it out of the PTQ. In addition about the time of the Storm / Roto Grip sales staff merger Storm and Roto Grip PBA regional players had the option of throwing both.

I agree that it would be up to the specific contract whether they'd be allowed to throw other equipment in addition to their sponsor's equipment. However, I feel like the point of company X's ball staff is to promote the company's equipment, to make it visible to other bowlers. Being on RG's ball staff, to me, means you should be throwing RG balls.
When Lonnie Waliczek was on the Circle staff a few years ago, he was not exclusive, he could throw other equipment given that Circle had such a limited lineup. He made the telecast, in fact, wearing a Circle polo but threw a 40-year-old Zone X on the show.
"But Roto and Storm are the same company!" Well, Track and Columbia were the same company as well but you didn't see Chris Barnes throwing Track or Wes Malott throwing Columbia (this year). Same for Ebonite and Hammer. If you say you're going to promote and use RG balls as part of the RG ball staff, I think you should.

Shelly,
I think you missed the facts versus the point you are making.
To make your point...(and once again Roger will correct me where I am wrong) when the tour season starts up in October LeClair and Kretzer will be Roto Grip only since Roto Grip will be fully registered on the PBA tour. Until that time Leclairs regional contract holds sway. And to quote myself from earlier..."Since Roto Grip was available to be used in regionals and PTQ's only (grassroots)a lot of guys threw both but then went Storm only when they made it out of the PTQ. In addition about the time of the Storm / Roto Grip sales staff merger Storm and Roto Grip PBA regional players had the option of throwing both.

shelley, speaking of wes mallott, on the shootout show he was on with tommy jones, wasn't he wearing a columbia shirt? it looked like he was throwing a big shot. when did he go away from track? is he just trying different companies during the summer or is that who he is going to go with? just curious.
-
Wes is back with Columbia now and it is all how the contact is. It could be a TV only contract use any storm ball during the tournament, but on TV you use roto-grip a few years ago I saw Jaros using a storm ball and asked him and thats how his contract was at the time.

Now that C300 has been bought by Ebonite, last year's contracts are gone and new contracts are being (or have been) drawn up. I believe Malott is back with C300 now. I don't know who, if anyone, is on the Track staff for the 07-08 season.

Looking at the reaction LeClair had with his Agent, he might have been better off with a "Grip" in his hand.
It's going to be nice seeing the rotos on tour again though. There were a ton of Odysseys going down the lanes at the regionals last weekend from non-staffers.

No one is on staff with Track. I don't think they will have any.
