Changes in cover
« on: October 24, 2006, 07:39:15 PM »
I was wondering what would happen if you took a ball down to 120 grit and then polished it? i was wondering(directly) what would happen to my epic saga or any ball for that matter?

Such coarse grits become counter-productive, because you reduce the contact area between ball and lane with such a rough surface. I also think that it is too coarse for a polish. You will clog the "valleys", but still have weak grip. I do not think that it is effectice, neither on oil or on dry. Maybe 120 grit with some compound finish to smooth out the peaks on the surface will be more effective, but I do not see a benefit against a high grit sanded surface.

Yes i use 500 abralon and brunswick high gloss on balls where i am lost what to do with. Works like a charm everytime gives it some balls under the shine to grip the lane. I usually use 1000 and high gloss with better results but the 500 and high gloss has saved 5-6 balls from getting sold off really fast.

I would say that anything below 320 is going to give you some serious sanding lines, regardless of compound or rough buff or whatever finish used overtop.  Besides looking terrible, I can imagine it would roll well (likely for reasons stated above).  I have used 500 grit abralon (and 600 and 800 grit sand paper) followed by polish.  These finishes seem to give a stronger reaction (earlier and more overall hook) than a higher grit finish with polish.  The polish does help get the ball down the lane a little easier over the plain sanded matte finish though.

Based on some of the posts I've seen earlier, I'm assuming that you're trying to gain some separation between the Saga and the Venus, correct ?  I'd probably take it down to 1000 grit first and try it and adjust it from there.

I have found that 500 grit abralon with extra shine works well on the Saga. I also like 4000 grit abralon as well, as it smmoths out the backend. I think the Saga is a great medium oil ball and the perfect compliment to the Battle.
