Need help with cell coverstock
« on: September 06, 2008, 12:57:51 AM »
I'm having alot of problem with the coverstock on the cell. It's shining up after only three games. I've taken down to 800, but it still shines up. I've seen some cells that do not shine up until 12-15 games. What can I do to keep it dull for a longer time? I wipe it after every shot with a microfiber towel, and clean it after every three games with cleaner. HELP!!!!!

Is the reaction changing? Does the ball go longer? Mine shines up a little after about 6 games. I just use ball cleaner with a 2000 pad. Ball works just fine. If the reaction doesn't change don't worry about it just keep cleaning it.

I think that maybe you're not using a strong enough ball cleaner. Try Legends cleaner or Valentino's Remedy, Neo-Tac's Liquid Nitro.

Also if you're bowling on heavy oil, use Clean and Dull every 3 outings.

Also at 800 grit vs the Stock 2000 grit Abralon (not a huge difference, if you realize that 2000 Abralon is roughly 1000 grit CAMI/US grade), your rev rate and where you play on the lane AND HOW OIL THE BALL HAS ALREADY SOAKED UP will govern how soon an "oil shine" will appear.

How long have you been using this ball?
It could need an oil extraction. That is one reason why an oil shine appears so quickly.

Not trying to hijack but my situation is relative.

After a number of games my Pluto is also absorbing more oil than usual.

I cleaned it with the old formula of Liquid Sandpaper, then hit it with Liquid Nitro to make sure all the sand was off, and then even scuffed it gently with a gray scotchbrite.

Now it looks like it is supposed OOB maybe a tiny bit duller, but I hope it doesn't gleen over after three games.

I also wipe my Pluto off every frame and clean with Liquid Nitro or Hook It
after three games.

My Pluto probably needs the oil extracted too, like Charlest mentions.

Darn, Anthony, I don't recall your mentioning that situation on Thursday. If it "oil shines" too quickly, and you had been using your Pluto a bunch, at 2000 grit dull, it could have absorbed its limit already???

I got the Pluto at the end of last winter's league but never really used it during the summer, it was too much ball for the shot I faced.

I think I have put between 30-40 games on it because I knew it would be effective at Carolier and not many other places due to how sneaky strong it is.

I noticed about a week or so ago the lane shine wasn't coming off the ball like it used to, but Thursday's immediate oil over caused alarm in my mind.

We'll see this week, if it gleens over quickly I'll give it a bath.

jamjr300,

Polished balls usually absorb less oil than dull ones because they are used on lighter oil pattern. I used to think that polish helped a ball absorb less oil, but that idea has, for me, come under suspicion.

I wish you luck with it and am very anxious to hear the results of your experiments.

I would recommend very strongly that you still clean your balls after every bowling session and give them a deep clean with Clean and Dull every 3 - 5 sessions, ONLY because you're bowlign on so much oil. No need to use the spinner. If anything that doesn't help because the cleaner doesn't stay on the ball for very long. Doesn't really give it a chance to work, before wiping it off.

Good luck and please keep us abreast of any developments. and Thank you.
(Nice averages! good bowling!)

Say Charles, think about the oil absorption another way. When a ball is sanded ridges and valleys are added. This, in effect, adds more surface area to the ball, allowing more oil to be wicked into the ball.

So many questions, so little time but I'm having fun.

I understand that in general terms, but today's balls have such high absorancy rates, as I said, I am not sure if when they are subjected to the same amount of oil, if it will actually absorb slower.

Remember that most people still do not wipe off the ball before each shot. So, polished or dull, most balls have 3 hours of bowling time to absorb that oil, to suck it in. SInce most absorb oil in seconds, not hours, I WONDER if polishing makes that much difference. As I said, I don't know. That's why I await his test results.

Also remember that many people also say that sanding a ball prior to a ball bath or a session in the Revivor or Rejuvenator machines does not make any difference in the oil extraction process. If it makes no difference coming out, should it, does it making a difference going in? I don't know for sure, as I have no way to measure it.
