SD-73 and Surface
« on: February 12, 2007, 03:30:15 PM »
I haven't posted any info because I've been trying to find the right surface matchup.  I tried it box and it was too strong.  Even with the 5.5" pin, it still read the fronts and mids too quickly forcing me left too quickly.  So I tried 2000grit and this was much better but still too much midlane. Carry was an issue although getting to the pocket was easier.  Man is this ball strong. Surfaces in this area just aren't strong enough to use a ball this strong for any length of time.  Definitely stronger than a box Horizon Solid which is 800.  So finally I decided to hit it with 1000grit Abralon and polish.  Now this ball has come to life.

Great push but the recovery and read is very strong for a polished ball.  Not a flip but a nice strong arc/flip that seems to give me unlimited right. With the high flare, but delayed till the last 30 or so feet, I'm able to feed the this ball left to right and have the angle downlane.  It's about 4-5 boards stronger than a Horizon Solid with identical surface and the Horizon has the pin at 4.5" from the axis.  Flare points and migration is drastically different on the two balls.  The Horizon flares very quickly in the first 15ft whereby the SD-73 is very strong in the last 20.  The SD-73 is definitely less affected by carrydown because of it's higher flare.

I know several people were hesitant when the SD-73 was announced because of the strength of the ball.  However, flare strength and cover can be easily modified to handle different volumes.  I wasn't able to use this ball more than a game.  Polished, the reaction is so good because I haven't lost the midlane strength that sometimes happens when you polish a solid.  First night after polishing???....well let's just say that I need to pick a bikini for my cruise I'm going to win with my honor score (244, 299, 278 - 821).  Assuming I'm eligible of course.

Congrats on the 800!  I still haven't drilled one up yet for those reasons you mentioned but the insight on the polish might just help.  Maybe when our PBA league swings around to the Shark pattern I'll finally drill one up.

I have used both 1000 matte and 2000 matte.  I have 2 drilled up.

The power of the ball is very impressive and in the market where I bowl the friction comes to us a bit quicker and we seem to get a drastic wet/dry so unfortunatly I do not get the chance to use the SD-73 Classic as much as I would like.

I have found the ball to need a little more coverstrock care than other releases but nothing that a bowler who takes care of their equipment cannot handle.

The 4x4 I keep 1000 matte I have used it on PBA Shark, Cheetah (swing it and watch it wheel) and USBC masters pattern.  I also used it on a THS (had to move in to 15 with a big swing but hey I'll take a 723).

I have a 2x4 at 2000 worked better on PBA Viper (although Horizon Solid 5x4 was better layout for the pattern).

We go to Chameleon and Scorpion in my 2 PBA leagues and I look forward to seeing how they work.

mrbowlingnut:  I ended up using Brunswick High Gloss polish since that's the only polish I have at the house.  I plan on getting another with a 6" pin and going with Storm Xtra Shine or Step 3.

DP3:  I wish that league didn't conflict with Cap or that we weren't doing so well because I would love to bowl on some of those patterns.  Plus I miss you and Ron up at Cap.  No one to BS with in between frames LOL!  Now let's see how the SD-73 works up at Cap.  Stripper must be broken because the past several weeks there's been massive wiggle downlane but you know how the fronts and track blow up.  So balls just stand up and lay off.  You aren't missing anything by not subbing.

I'm seeing the same thing with mine, 5" pin about 1" over my bridge, I have it highly polished over 1000. It pushes through the fronts easily and just explodes on the backend.

Very impressive so far.
