« on: February 06, 2005, 04:49:29 PM »
I'm wondering how the Big Hit compares to the Sonic X Pearl, as far which gets better length and which has more backend and which one ges through drier heads better?

I have both balls and have tested both extensively. The Sonic X is much stronger. Even on dry, both balls are very clean through the heads and mids. The sonic x has a stronger cover, and it will over react in the backend if the lanes are really dry. The big hit is all about arc and low hook potential no matter how dry the lanes are. Big Hit is best when the heads are fried. The Sonic X is best on a very light fresh pattern, I like both balls, but only on the proper condition.
Sonic X       length 9       backend 6
Big hit       length 9       backend 3

this is a simple question...

the sonic series have a very nice solid core, and the big hit only have weight blocks.. you always get a better roll with a core... weight blocks suck... and pancakes are worse....  just my rule of thumb...

The Sonic-X is considerably stronger than the Big Hit, at least one full notch up in hook and in oil handling capacity. Big Hit is for light to medium-light; the Sonic is for medium-light up to as much as medium. Just got a Sonic-X and my first use indicates that I drilled it too strong for my needs. Have to do more testing and try it in league yet.

The Big Hit has a modified pancake core. "Modified" is the key word here. It has a flip block in the bottom for more flare. The difference between the Big Hit and the Hit is solely that flip block; it's enough to make it a dynamic core, just as Power Grooves and Scouts are. It's enough for Storm to market the Hit as a beginner's ball and the Big Hit as a dry-ish lane ball for professional and higher average bowlers.

Thanks!

And how is your Sonic X drilled, Jeff?

I have a BHP drilled 6 X 5.5.  For me, it is a very condition specific light oil ball, not true dry.  It still needs a touch of head oil to get down the lane, but it must have dry boards to make its move.  Too dry up front and it craps out before it gets to the pocket.  Leave it in the bag if there is any hint of carrydown.  I've considered redrilling it a bit stronger, but it feels so right when it matches up that I've been hesitant to mess with it.

I recently picked up a used SonicX, and it's being plugged and redrilled right now.  I probably wont get a chance to throw it until the weekend, but I'll check back once I do.

Pretty strong: 4x3.5, pin next to ring finger, 2.5" above midline, no weight hole. (Well, maybe it's not for mediums... still testing)
