RG Kingdom and Storm Nation: I am thinking of some ideas on upgrading my medium and medium-heavy arsenal to create more of a defined step down and eliminate duplicate looks. So far, this is what I'm thinking:

1) Defiant Soul (upgrades both my Rogue Cell and Infinite Theory)
2) Disturbed (upgrades my Outlaw)
3) Hy-Road (would most likely keep)
4) Deranged, Hy-Road Pearl, ? ? ?, or keep my Nomad Dagger

The whole thing that I want to do is create more balance in the arsenal, especially with these 4 balls. Also, even though I haven't used as many pearl covers in the past due to having higher speed and liking surface, I have been finding success with polished and pearl covers lately.

As for my heavy oil arsenal, I'm happy with what I have in the Defiant and Critical Theory. Same goes for my medium-light arsenal where the Frantic does the job really well. So I don't plan on changing anything there.

Stats: 430 rev rate tweener, 19-22mph speed, 4-1/4" PAP straight across, lower track

With that being said, do you guys think I'm on the right track? Or, are there some other ideas that you can think of?

Go deranged...it looks crazy!

On a side note: I was looking to fill a similar gap...I picked up a fire road cause I dont match up with pearl centripetals (marvel pearl) and I sincerely miss r2x pearl...

So despite some negative reviews...and very lil hype I picked up a fire road (now on clearance) and couldn't be happier! Its like a flippier crossroad..I love it..but I the deranged and disturbed are next on my gotta have it list!!

The Soul is a GREAT ball...its a must
Then I do Disturbed and Deranged....

I will say the Bezerk although now discontinued, is a great ball also..I actually liked its roll better than the Hyroad, but I was never a huge Hyroad or Crossroad fan, I'm a higher tilt player and I had both drilled long pin to pap and pin up, so they didn't read the lane well for me. Was probably my own fault though for how I had drilled. They were OK on broken down lanes but on true fresh mediums or mediums with a bit of carry down they were very inconsistent for me, again probably the drilling.
Ive been toying with getting the Disturbed myself, but I really like my war eagle in that spot....Torn....

I will say I really think Roto Grip has the best line up over all right now....If I didn't like the Seismic stuff as much as I have and if it hadn't kept my curiosity, I would be all Roto Grip.

I can speak for the Disturbed as one kick ass ball. It just doesn't quit. With that being said the Deranged is simply a no brainer for me. I will be picking mine up on Tuesday along with my Totally Defiant. Roto rules.

Deranged is a great looking ball. It seems to pick up where the Disturbed left off for many players. The limitation I have seen in the Disturbed is that once there is friction it doesn't turn the corner as well from the inside line. The Deranged has no issue with that at all....jumps off the spot.

I agree with the Fire Road being a must have. I meant to drilla couple when they were released but will definitely be doing one this fall with reduced pricing. A friend of mine goes through 30-40 balls a year and that one stayed in his bag all season. It is a winner.

And don't forget about the Lucid on the high end. Easily one of the best Utah balls I have ever thrown. I anticipate that one will close out sometime around December or January as they will have the Byte in October and another Premier line ball in January/Febuary.

I don't know what people see in some of the ROAD balls. I had a Victory Road Pearl. Didn't like it. I have a Fire Road, don't like it.

The victory would go straight on any oil but on dryer lanes would check up too soon. The Fire needs oil to get downlane, but when there is oil it won't turn the corner hard enough.

I love my Disturbed. I would imagine the Deranged would be a killer piece.

I used my Deranged for the first time. I am extremely impressed. I will not get into a review because its only my first nite, but wow does this ball hit, and hit hard. My teammates comment was that ball is just sick!! They also said it had a simular move like the Wrecker. This ball is going to be big!!

It appears that you would benefit from a lower RG type pearl (Marvel Pearl), and a smooth/clean piece (IQ Tour).

Depending on how many games and the cover damage on your Dagger I'd likely KEEP it. Ball is just as good as arguably the old T-Road Pearl.
The Hyroad Pearl if we had to assess would be closer to your Dagger. I have a new T-Road Pearl, 2 Hyroad Pearls and a relatively fresh Dagger (all are relatively close).

The Deranged is the polar opposite of its counterpart. I'd say its more in the Wrecker shape-type (minus the hybrid type roll if you will), with a snap MUCH harder than a Disturbed. As a side note, the Rumble is closer to a Disturbed than in the Wrecker family. Hope that's not too confusing.

I feel a Deranged would fit in tandem w/your Hyroad and if going w/a Marvel Pearl you'd get a Deranged shape, just a bigger footprint (due to the MP stronger cover) and more roll on the MP (due to lower RG).

That is an interesting thought there. The cover on my Dagger is actually in really good shape, having done a total resurfacing/bake recently. Knowing now that it is similar to the T-Road Pearl in terms of overall reaction (my Nomad Dagger is more angular than the Hy-Road), that would fit pretty well between the Hy-Road and the Frantic.

On the medium-heavy side, I had thought about the Marvel Pearl as an option as well. I'm thinking I could fit that between the Defiant Soul and then have a step down as you said (either the IQ Tour or Disturbed as a compliment).

So with that in mind, I could do this:
Heavy: Defiant
Heavy: Critical Theory
Heavy: Defiant Soul
-----
Medium-Heavy: Disturbed or IQ Tour Solid
Medium-Heavy: Marvel Pearl
-----
Medium: Hy-Road
Medium: Nomad Dagger
-----
Medium-Light: Frantic

You seem to have the right idea with your listing of pieces per category of hvy/med/lt oil...

With all due respect (and we're probably talking very general here), in regards to some of your observations, I would still invite you not to be set in allocating a set ball-type to a set oil category (again I'm respectfully challenging your thought process in a friendly/professional manner)... When getting into those balls that are below heavy-oil performance but above light oil performance, you can get a ton of range moreso than what the price-point or marketing info dictates.

For instance, the Marvel P (used by Haugen/Fagan on HEAVY oil) if you watched the shows, on the long patterns, Fagan and Duke both tried using the Disturbed (which for generic purposes "hooks" more than say the Marvel P, but Fagan and Duke both started to see the Disturb "puke" as the pattern oil migrated). A ball like the Marvel P can often be used in HEAVY oil over even a Defiant Soul or Disturbed.

I would offer; build your arsenal around "medium/performance" level pieces like; solid symmetrics with med/high rg's, pearls w/low(er) rg's, and performance hybrids. Mix in a combo of your fav layouts or even pin downs (similar to what Fagan and other tour guys do with low rg symmetric pearls).

I'm no tour guy BUT having worked for the late Tony Reyes and hanging around at some of the stops I've learned to mix-n-match my arsenal around those MP's, IQ's, Roads, Outlaws, Disturbs, Daggers, Wreckers, etc...

MJH- I appreciate your thoughts and you gave me some good things to look at. Don't worry- challenging the thought process in the way you did is a good thing as it ultimately will help me get to where I want to be.

You bring up a good point about Fagan and Haugen on the 52' Badger pattern. The Marvel Pearl did handle the long pattern well and I noticed the Disturbed struggling to carry. Later on with the Milwaukee Open, I noticed that Duke had switched from the Marvel Pearl to the Disturbed, only to go back to the Marvel Pearl since it was able to roll cleaner and have more energy in back to carry better.

I'm thinking pin down Marvel Pearl may be a very nice option to have based on what you mention and also thinking of my favorite layouts.

you never know if the disturbed was 4000 grit with 100 games on it
and the marvel was brand new with a 500pad

plus the fact after the hour of practice they had a burn spot on the show
marvel pearl with its polished surface isn't made for heavy at all
once you get teeth into it any pearl ball can be used on oil
