drill pattern for the mars
« on: May 28, 2009, 07:07:09 PM »
i recently bought a mars and had it drilled with the pin right over the bridge in between the fingers and the CG directly in the grip center. i have used this layout many times before with great success most recently on a chainsaw massacre. i know the mars is for dry or light oil but this ball does absolutly nothing just glides straight down the lane. i am wondering if this drill pattern is all wrong for the mars cause i have plenty of hand anywhere from 400 to 450 revs. should i redrill it or maybe change the surface. i was thinking maybe knocking the shine off alittle with a scotchbrite pad or even taking it to 4000 abrlon any help would be greatly apprciated thanks in advance

you are right bradley i did buy and drill it for the dry and there is nothing wrong with having a dry lane ball but our house around here are usally fairly dry especially in the summer months. i like to swing the ball and with the mars the only way i get consistant results is by playing straight up the boards which is not really my "A" game. do you think a stronger drill or surface change would allow me to swing it a little or is this a ball thats not meant to be swung out. thanks for your help.

Before you do anything else, just adjust the surface.  It might be too shiny for what you need out of the box.  More than likely it's just not having a chance to read the friction downlane.

Mine is drilled pin above bridge and cg kick about 1/2 in right of center. Took the polish off and put the surface at about 4000 and it evens out the roll and makes the ball very predictable.

I had a mars drilled just like laddog and it was great.  It is a dry lane ball but if you have hand like most it was great to make area up the outside.  Even though you have a high rev rate you also might have a lot of tilt which makes the ball slide even further.

So I take it this is a 6x6 pattern? If so, that will be long and weak on the reaction anyways. I went with a 5x5 1/2 and it's a monster on the dry and glides through the heads but is not intended to be a monster.

First of all, you may have to play straighter. It is not meant to hook the whole lane if the condition you are playing. I seriously doubt you have 400+ rpms. I bet I'm lower then that have have decent axis on the ball but I could hook it on could hook it on anything but wise enough to know that if the condition is not there I'm playing straighter. But I seriously doubt the ball is doing what you are stating unless you have it drilled in a way that is so far off your pap and your ball driller did something strange to it, should be fine.

thanks gbrown you were exactly right it is my high axis tilt that was causing it to slide even further down the lane. took the shine off the ball with a scotchbrite pad and it works perfectly. thanks to everyone for there help.
