I took the plunge (R/G Cell) need layout advice
« on: January 09, 2008, 09:01:11 PM »
I ordered one last night from my local shop.  I could really use some layout advice to avoid another disaster like I had with my Odyssey.  I'll provide as much info as I can to help.

I have an Epic that has been the best ball I've ever owned for over 2 years.  I've kept it at 800 wetsand.  The layout is 4 x 4 3/4 MB with the pin 1 7/8 above the midline (under ring).  I liked it so much I wanted to try the Odyssey to fit above it.  I went with the exact same layout.  I really didn't like the ball motion at all, so the weight hole got plugged and moved.  It was originally 6 3/4 from grip center in the thumb positive quadrant.  It got moved to about an inch inside of my PAP to try and slow the spin time down a bit.  It was better, but after a lot of surface adjustments and tinkering I just couldn't find a spot for it.  I gave it to my father who is shooting lights-out with it.

I think that layout was just too strong for that particular core.  It was puking out on me, even with a 4000 plus polished surface.  My Epic OOB is outstanding, so I guess I just really underestimated the strength of the Maximus II core.  I do not want to make that same mistake with the Cell.

I'd like the ball to be continuous more than anything.  I'm not really sure where I can fit it into my current arsenal, but I'm sure I will find a place for it.  Right now this is what I'm using for mediums up to heavier oil and PBA patterns.  Listed as pin, MB, and pin height.

Break 1- 4 x 4 1/2 x 3  1000 plus Bean's Secret Sauce
Break 2- 5 x 2 3/4 x 1 7/8  OOB
Epic as described above

Break 1 gets good length and makes quite a snappy move on the back.  Ball flares a ton.  I generally use it on a fresh THS, or sometimes on the PBA patterns with a different surface.  Break 2 reads the mids good and is very hard arcing with no signs of quit.  It's probably my favorite piece at this time.  It's so good that I rarely use the Epic, but I keep it with me.  It's about time to retire it; it's cracked around the fingers numerous times and has a ton of games.  The Cell will probably replace it in my bag.

Yes these are all solid reactives, and yes I know the Cell will be yet another.  I just seem to do quite well with solids as opposed to pearls and particles.  My stats are in my profile along with a video link.  Sorry for the long post and all the info...I'm just trying to be thorough.  Any and all advice will be much appreciated.

Don,

I have my Cell drilled with pin 3" from PAP and MB about 4.5-5" from Pap, Pin is beside Ring and a 45 degree layout. Very strong , consistent roll, nice strong ARC. To me this ball is very comparable to the original Epic, a little stronger though. Also I am a stroker and get about 4" of flare with the Cell... Do not expect it to be Snappy, but a strong continuous Arc... Also do you get BTM? The layout they did for their Tweener was a stacked leverage... I think you will find this an excellent ball for your PBA experience league... Hope this helps . PM me if you have any specific questions. I have only had mine since Monday so I am still getting used to it...

I would go with the layout above or even keep your layout that you like so much on your epic just instead of putting it with the pin below your fingers drill it 4x4 with your pin above your fingers

Well, apparently the distributor that the shop uses is out of Cells for the time being.  I will not be getting it until late next week now.  The shop owner drives to the distributor once a week to pick stuff up.  I should have just ordered one online...flame away.

No flaming ... just the knowledge that the little wait will make the first game you throw it that much more exciting and anticipated. Kind of like a kid waiting for Christmas.
