Retro Resurrection
« on: March 27, 2006, 01:28:01 AM »
I'd like to get your thoughts on this ball.

Buddies has it on closeout, and it's one of the few that are actually in 14lb, so I was thinking about picking it up.  I've never thrown any Roto equip and don't know much about them except that they look very similar to Storm (not sure if they are made by Storm, designed by Storm, or if just the core graphics look similar), but I haven't thrown any Storm equipment either.

What condition is this ball best for?

The core looks identical to the RS- line, and I've heard good things about the RS-1, RS-X, etc.  Is this ball equally as good?

this core/cover is NOT as strong as the RS line...

but a great all around benchmark/first ball out of the bag ball for mediums!

GRAB ONE!

And.....Roto Grip designs all their own stuff...they are only manufactured at the Storm Plant

Everything that everyone has said is true.  You should see what year the Ressurection was poured. I have a 2004 pour. Its a great benchmark piece, it reads the lanes very evenly and not too jumpy off the dry. I would say the cover is comparable to the RS-x, but more along the lines of a Silver Streak solid. Now 2005 purs(new resin company) WHOLE different monster!!!! Can you say HOOK? I dunno what they did, but you will notice if you saw the 2 pours side by side, the 05 looks really glossy, meaning better energy retention and a harder move off the backend.

Its a great ball by all means. But I don't want you to read everyone's opinion and think that people were fibbing If you want a snappy solid 2005 is your pour, if you want a solid Benchmark piece 2004 is the year to go.

It showed up today!  It's a 2004 pour, so I guess it'll be a good benchmark ball!  Looks good, but I'm sort of disappointed....I was expecting red/grey, or red/silver, but it's more of red/blue.  Not that the color matters, just different from all the pictures I've seen.

Not sure when I'll get it punched up, but I'm excited!

Yeah I've seen a few myself that varied vastly. But I liked them all. But I think that when you roll it, you'll forget all about the color. Let us know how it works out for you.

Just thought I would update this.

I finally got the ball drilled last weekend.  I had it drilled using the 4" layout with the MB in the "C" position (according to the drill sheet).  Wanted a nice mid lane arc while still keeping a decent backend.  Tried to throw it Sunday but the lanes were bone dry.  Couldn't keep the thing on the lane....left gutter or 7 pin every time!

Took it to leagues Wednesday and was able to get about 6 frames out before I had to put it away.

I really like the ball and can't wait to throw it some more and figure it out.  Thanks to everybody for the info and input.

What type of polish do you recommend?  I think the only thing I have right now is Ebonite's Factory Polish.

I would try any polish that will not change the surface prep first meaning no grit, what you have will work, brunswick factory finish,or storms extra shine. These polishes will only shine the ball add slight length and improve back end hook all on dryer conditions. If you want go to the ROTO Grip web site and check out thier ball maintenance suggestions. look at the serial # on the ball there were 2 pours they start with 04- more even reacting,05- slightly more aggersive midlane and back end. Mine is the 04 and with polish, storms extra shine it's a monster on all medium conditions.

Bump for DP3.

Also, I used this ball to try to find my PAP - it was the only ball that I could read the first line of oil.  I used the video from BrunsNick as a guide, but I don't have a quarter scale yet so I used a flexible ruler and protractor to make the measurements.

Close as I can tell, my PAP (at least on this ball) is 4 5/8 x 5/8 up.

That actually puts the drilling on this ball as 2 1/2 pin to PAP, and 4 1/2 PAP to grip center.

I would recommend getting the Retro. I bought one used and it is great for medium lanes. Good recovery. I have been throwing RG equipment the last two years and will not throw anything else. If you get the Retro you will not be sorry.....

I had one and it reacted almost identical to the track xception. The only thing I seen was a little more finish on the retro. I also kept it at about a smooth 1500 with no polish. This made it skid through the heads like I wanted and it picked up nice in the late mids and it was just backend.
