Need help with Mercury
« on: May 08, 2006, 09:16:56 PM »
Any Irish lads around,

Please help, thought I would try a Roto-Grip
I have just bought a Mercury for a particular house with dry lanes.(Ryans idea a few months ago, cheers mate....)

Seriously...
Used for first time last night on dryish lanes ball burned out after 20 ft, overall hooked 30+ boards.

Dissapointed, I had to put it back into the bag and get the plastic out.
(Condition supposed to be 38ft med oil xmas tree pattern, ha ha..(mechanics do lie))

Any ideas on re drilling or weight/flare hole.

High rev bowler, speed 16 to 17 mph
PAP 5 3/4, 1/2 down

Ball 14.5lb 3oz top 2.5in pin
CG in palm centre 1/2in right
Pin 2in from PAP in line with ring finger.
Finishing side weight 1/4oz

  CG      PAP

I am not sure if your drilling sketch is formated correctly by this web site. Hmmm, sounds as if you have a drilling for oily wet/dry conditions on the ball - and probably the oil is lacking and it rolls too early, burning up?

My suggestion: With your high track, my guess would be pin above the bridge, maybe even pushed a bit out towards the track, and the CG stacked, ending up near grip center or even a bit further towards your PAP. Should be a (almost) 6x4 drilling. Putting the pin lower might make the ball hit the holes. Ball should go looong and the make a late, sharp turn, easy to control.

If this is still too much, try putting an X-hole above your PAP to reduce flare and tame the thing down a bit, if necessary.

Hope this helps?

Dizzy,
Drilling sketch did come out different. Existing drilling is 2x5.
Thats the layout I was thinking of, needed a bit of confirmation.
Cheers

Ah, yes, that matches your description better. I suppose you get victimized by the ball's smooth and early roll. It should do well on oily, spotty conditions, but not on dry turf - unless you can deliver it with no side roll and a good drag shot.

Cheers lads,
I have just put the ball in for filling, so I have a couple of days to decide on drilling.
I also have a Power Groove Dry/R drilled 4L with weight hole above PAP, this ball is tooooo much at this house also, the proposed 6x4 is nearly the same drilling so you can see my dilema.
Other option is go down the Gym put on 40pounds of muscle and loft the ball way past the arrows.... :-))

Uh, if it is THAT dry, then it is time to pull the polyester ball out of the bag... or a Red Pearl Urethane Hammer (remake wthout a core). With the Dry/R drilled that weak, I do not see an opportunity to put anything with a core below it! Good luck, though...

Ryan,
started out first ball, trying to put mercury centre at foul line out to five
at 35ft. It didnt make it, took off at 20ft rolled out past brooklyn. Moved
5 boards right launched it down the outside, took out the seven pin. ball went back in bag.

Called over the mechanic had a ''QUIET'' little chat, and this is supposed to be our oilier new house shot.

Used plastic after that taking revs down, still 20 boards of pop, also outside three out of bounds past 35 ft.

Tried mercury again 3rd game it moved even more across the middle.
7 pins were fun, Blazing inferno, 30 to 5 at 25ft then back to 7pin..!!!!!

Tomorrow night at different house I will be using GP2 and Paradigm 3mph slower
and only hooking 15 to 20 boards..

Regs
frustrated
Graham
PS
Wierdly i didnt miss a ten pin 5no

Ryan,

on their open play house shot I can ave 200+ but it is flat and they will not use it for leagues..

I poped down the side of the lane last night, oil to 35, just cocked up at the front (middle sides everywhere). I think there is a bit of jiggery pokery going on with the league bowlers,

I bought the Mercury especially for this house, everywhere else i have a good arsenal which I can match up.

Dusted off an old Clear Wolf with the asym block in last night, drilled very weak, it was bowlable but not enough pop, and then became eratic when pattern broke down from staight plastic bowlers (after 6 frames), still moving 20 boards plus at times. Outside 5 right side only past 30ft OOB, outside 5 short of 30ft clean.

The Mercury should be re drilled for next league there, I will keep you posted.

Still frustrated

Graham

(Bowling in best house I have found in Uk tonight so I should be happier tomorrow)

Guildford Spectrum. Im happier now bowled there last night.

Proper oil patterns. Bowl is clean. Staff good. Pro shop guy helpfull. They have 3 or 4 staff preparing lanes, cleaning seating area and washing down approaches before every league.

I travel 40 miles there twice a week for the experience...
