Mercury and Saturn opinions
« on: March 14, 2006, 11:59:02 AM »
I have had a great deal of success in the past with the following low flaring balls; amf tour menace, columbia red pulse solid and pearl, and the amf tour extra.  I am curious as to how these two roto grip balls react in comparison to the previous balls mentioned since they have similair differentials.  Any opinions from people with experience or knowledge of how these ball react in comparison to my older equipment would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Don

I can only expound on the Saturn. It is much stornger than the specs would have one believe. That said it is very driller friendly and absolutely one of the best match ups of core and cover stock to hit the market in along time, glides thru the heads clean, good look in the mid lane and medium to strong arc on the back end with great hitting power and carry. Cover stock takes any adjustments extermely well. The ball lends itself to any bowling style and is accomodating to even small hand adjustments for reaction. IMHO this ball is a must have for any bowlers bag. Roto Grip has hit it out of the park with this offering. It is my understanding that the Mercury is a wonderful compliment to the Saturn on drier lane conditions. Much longer, very clean thru heads and mids with a very smooth transition back end with similar hitting power and carry.
Just an after thought Have you checked out the other posts on the Saturn here?
there is some good stuff in thoose posts also.

Thanks for the reply.  Yes, I have read some reviews, was just wondering if any of the people who have thrown the saturn and or mercury have thrown any of the pulse or amf tour balls.

I match up extremely well to both the Saturn and Mercury so if that experience is a guide I'd think you might like them as well.

If any corroboration is needed, FWIW, Mark matches up VERY WELL with the Mercury and the Saturn!

I put an order in for both balls earlier this week, so by tomorrow I should have them drilled and follow with a mini review this weekend.  I also spoke with axeweldr, and he is in love with these balls as well.  Looks like low flaring equipment might make a comeback!

This ball and the RS series has always intrigued me.  Great balls at a low price point.  So, I punched up a Saturn last night as a RSP compliment.  Only threw it a few times cause I had to get back to work but I was suprised at how strong it was.  Definately needed some polish.  I hit it lightly with Track Clean N Sheen and I'll be throwing it tonight.

Thanks to rotomike for helping me with the layout on this ball

Just like to add briefly, that the Saturn is an excellent ball for the price point. Depending on layouts, (opted for 4.5 X 1.5), is a medium condition ball and out of box would be able to handle medium oil.  I think it would overreact for most players on dry.  Polished, gets it a few feet longer and a tad bit stronger backend.

I've had the ball for several weeks and plan on a review after a few more bowling practice outings.  I would caution prospective ball buyers, this is not a tame ball, though it is fairly predictable and smooth, it arcs like a solid and has terrific carry potential.  Out of the box 800 factory sanded is an arcing hook monster, until a little lane oil penetrates the cover, glad I tamed it down with the CG kicked out to the PAP. IMHO, most players will want SOME polish on it. YMMV, of course.

Speculation: I would think that the Saturn and Mercury would be good for medium conditions and would make a nice one two punch, Saturn when there is oil inside or backends need a little help, and the Mercury when the heads begin to give out or the backends are moving a goodly amount.  I don't have the Mercury... but same ball as Saturn only different pearlized cover = longer...more head slide and more energy stored for backend.  Coverstock preparation tinkering would make these very interesting offerings for the player.

I just ordered a Mercury today, I can't wait to get this bad boy for lighter conditions. This will be my first Roto Grip ball, and what I've seen from others, it sure has a sweet reaction.

Thanks for the report Mark, I am drilling both balls today and I will be posting reviews on them shortly.  I also will be making my annual usbc trip at the end of May, hopefully these 2 balls will be an asset there.

I decided to go with the balls strenghth and drilled it tame, put the pin 2" off of my axis and kicked the cg into the middle of my grip.  It works great on a  wet/dry house shot.  Nice and smooth arc.  What surprised me was the pin carry.  Rolled a 718 the first time out with it.  Had 477 for two the next time out but ran into a carry down problem the third game and abandoned it for the Battle.

i also have trouble with the wet-dry patterns.  i will be getting both the saturn and the mercury.  the normal pattern that i see is huge oil wall at the 8 board and pretty dry outside of that.  with my slow 14-15 mph and up the back release, was wondering if the mercury would still roll up as well with the drill that you used.
