When you go pin axis, you are virtually taking the core out of the equation.  Cover is already a far more important predictor of ball reaction, but you are emphasizing the advantage.  Going pin axis with a medium/strong pearl allows you to retain some hit that the pin axis drill will reduce, but you won't get quite the predictability that the drilling will provide with a solid cover.

The only ball that I've drilled pin axis, was an ambush from brunswick, being a pearl particle, I felt that it was a perfect candidate.  It worked as advertised, but hit on the average was sub par.

Personally I think that you'd do better cutting a neptune or something with a low differential if you want that kind of control.  If you want smooth with a greater hook potential, go with a high grit sanded saturn or a purple thunderstruch from storm.

If you still think pin axis is the answer (if your backends fly) don't take the term pin axis to the word.  i.e. don't put the pin right on top of your pap.  I have heard horrible results from this, as the ball can flare fowards and backwards if thrown differently.  Hit it with a pin 1 1/2" or so from your pap.
