If the ball is going too far before turning, then change the cover. Whether or not someone else has success or not doing so shouldn't prevent you from changing the surface. Start with small changes and fine tune as needed.
Hit with a worn 2000 abralon pad by hand. I NEVER keep shiny balls at OOB. You'll be hard pressed to replicate that finish anyway. So just break the cover in the beginning.

Hey bill how did you drill the skid? I currently have one sitting here but haven't drilled it yet. I usually put the same layout on most of my balls which is 60 4 3/4 40
