First night using the Epic Saga
« on: July 27, 2006, 03:56:06 PM »
I decided I would try out my new Epic Saga (14 lbs, 5oz before drilling) tonight in  summer league. The lanes weren't really suitable for that ball. They were on the light to medium side. Never the less I was stubborn. I only managed a couple of practice shots before starting because the thumb hole needed some work. I started off with leaving three and promptly missing the spare. The ball had more power and hook then I anticipated. Next shot was a strike. Then I left a six/ten and promptly chopped the ten pin. I followed that with an other strike and then threw a split, right on the head pin. I drilled the next shot in the pocket and left a ten pin that I missed by a whisker (I need someone to make a chia ball!). I then threw another decent ball but ended up with yet another split. So...after six frames I had two strikes and four opens. I managed to leave a seven pin on the next shot and made that. But it was clear that the Epic Saga was just too strong for the lane conditions of the night. So I switched to the Horizon and from there on I managed to bowl better the rest of the night. I bowled a 142 the first game, a 236 the second, and a 197 the third for a 575 series. Not great, not bad. Should have switched bowling balls earlier. Now..what did I learn. First of all, the Epic Saga is a powerful, aggressive bowling ball. Despite the apparent similarities in stats with the Horizon, it is a much more aggressive ball. Now...I have a relatively slow ball speed so that tends to heighten the aggressiveness of a bowling ball. I do know that with the Epic Saga I was using a 32 over 17 shot and with the Horizon I switched to a 22 over 10. Secondly, the Saga hits hard and carries well. Thirdly, it is a very "pretty" bowling ball. It is a medium to medium/heavy ball for someone with a relatively slow speed.  It will certainly be a medium for people with faster ball speed. It has a strong arc. All in all, despite my poor performance tonight, I was impressed with the Saga. I was also impressed with the Horizon. Truthfully I thought it would be too dry for the Horizon but it worked just beautifully. Learned something there tonight. Now I want to go out and practice on a bit more oil and get the hang of the Epic Saga. It's a good ball. Don't let my poor score deceive you. It was just too dry for a slower ball speed bowler to use that ball tonight.

i tried my freshly drilled saga for one game at the center where the shop is located.  lots of oil with tight backends.  had to stand right and go up the boards with a fair amount of hit.  a little too much oil for the ball as it was set up more for medium conditions, but it did roll up real nice and struck about half of the time.  next day, tried it on medium light wood condition.  had to stand left and send it, but the ball now could backend as i thought it might with less oil.  interesting, if i hit the ball at all, it made a very sharp  move left at the breakpoint, so i had to move farther left with my feet.  if i just stroked the ball with minimal hit, the ball pushed down lane further and made a real nice strong move to the pocket.  did not leave a single ten pin in four practice games.  left a lot of 4's however, as i said a very strong move off the breakpoint.  i can't wait to try it this week in league with fresh heads and strong backends.

From the sounds of it, seems like this ball is a tad flippier than I thought it would be. Exactly how strong is the core in the saga?

It has approximately the same core as the Epic Battle and Epic. I'm not so sure that it's flippy as it is a really strong arc type of bowling ball. I just think that it's not for heavy oil or very light conditions which is not a suprise. Notice that no one has disliked the ball as of yet, it's just that it's been tried on conditions that it's not really made for, with some success. That speaks well for the ball I would think. It is a strong ball however.

Must interject here, the Saga has the exact same core as the Epic Battle.  And judging from what I've heard so far, I can't wait to get this one.

Drilled my first one of these today, and as I havn't drilled my own yet, was looking forward to see what it did..

Unfortunatly, the lanes weren't great, but still looked good. It looked to have a very nice roll, and looked pretty stong. The guy was just throwing a few shots to try it out after drilling, and was also throwin a new Shock and Awe, and a scorching Inferno. He said he really liked the Saga and prefered it of the two new balls.

Definitly looking forward to drilling my own and getting a few videos up

Threw mine today on a 39ft Sport shot.

All I have to say is WOW!!!!..much stronger off of the spot than I was expecting..but then I remembered that the cover is similar to the SSSE cover and the core is a Battle.  Hitting power is phenominal.  The color is also much cooler looking than the pictures.  I cannot wait to see what it does on a THS.

Ok I couldn't resist any longer... Drilled myself a Saga today

Took it out for a few games this evening and I was way more excited than you should ever get throwing a bowling ball!

I was getting great length and good movement off the dry on a condition where a ball has a tendancy to skid on a bit.. It revved up so fast of my hand (reminded me very much of the SSSE in that matter) and was very smooth.  I started out playing jsut inside 3rd arrow and throwing out to about 7 board at the break, shooting 218.  After a couple of games I decided to rty an extreme (for me anyway lol) outside line and moved out to arround first and was equaly impressed with it from out there.

I only had one Tap from the pocket i the 3 games (A 9-pin) and had FOUR messengers, so i'd say carry was "better than average "

Can't wait to use this more

WOW! all of this talk about the Epic Saga has me drooling for another RG ball, but since I already have the Battle and the Epic as my one-two punch I really can't see me getting the Epic Saga.

Especially since summer is here and I really need a dry lane ball for my two leagues that I am in which by the 3rd game the lanes have been dryer then Death-Valley in the middle of August
Now throwing pretty much all flavors...

ok, bowled league tonight with the saga.  short and heavy house shot, drier boards 8 and out.  a little lost early and started out with 161 playing straight up the track around 8.  went deeper, swung 15 to 8 and shot 208.  went deeper, 18 to 10 and finished with 233.  not great, but ball did play deeper lines well.  will be bowling a local tourney this weekend where i have had difficulty before (synthetic heads, wood back ends).  will see how the saga looks there.

A few more games myself last night... Still find the main aspects of this ball to be ‘controllably strong’!  The lanes had not overly strong back ends, and had 3 games from league already on them, but the Saga still impressed.  First game again stared throwing around 3rd and out and shot 233.  Moved around next game, quite far outside most of the game, and shot around 200, then moved in a tad and basically threw at the gutter at 40ft for a 245.

Still VERY impressed

I'm still playing around with the Epic Saga. Just haven't had enough oil to use it as of yet. One thing...this ball is strong. Another thing: a couple of months ago I asked a question about the apparently similar stats between the Horizon and Epic Saga. Well....stats lie! The two balls are not really similar at all. The Saga is much stronger, meaning there is a place for both in your bag...which is a good thing since they are both wonderful bowling balls.

a question for you... if the Epic and the Saga were drilled the exact same and one was to throw them, how would they compare to eacg other???
Now throwing pretty much all flavors...

The Epic would start to rev and move a little sooner then the Saga and should handle a little more oil then it's litter mate. The Battle would handle more and start sooner then the Epic. The Epic is a good medium/heavy ball, the Battle for lots of oil and the Saga for medium.
