Got My DeTerminator In Today.....
« on: June 23, 2006, 12:43:12 PM »
......and have been playing with it a bit tonight. I've found some interesting things that confirm some of my prior beliefs pertaining the Epic line cores, as well as why certain layouts seem to rev harder than others (spin time). Once I figure out a way to compile the data in a comprehensive (and BR friendly ) format I'll put it up. Stay Tuned!

I've had my determinator for quite a while now and wouldn't think of not having one in my shop.

A determinator locates precisely where the mass bias is located within the ball, and can be used to determine the speed/strength of it.  Just as many cg's are not on spot, many of the mass bias markings are not accurate either.

When drilling symmetrical balls, the thumb hole, or very near it, is where the resulting mass bias always ends up being located.  However, adding an extra hole will move the mass bias a very small amount, and the determinator helps to find that resulting spot.  Because they are symmetrical, the mass bias tends to be relatively weak.

Well............... its very interesting .

Seriously though, its really making me think about what is the most influential part of the ball (outside of coverstock). Conventionally thinking, if you place the pin of the ball on your axis you will get 0 flare. However when you place the pin of the ball on the axis on the DeTerminator you generate maximum ball flare (because at that point the Mass Bias/PSA is the furthest it could be away from the balls actual PSA). As one would predict, I have found that when I lay the ball down so that my initial track rolls along the wheel is that the "stronger" mass biased layout (60-75 degrees) balls  take longer to find its PSA/Mass Bias. I found this to be true with a couple of my Battles. My "Mato-1" Battle http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h305/Roto-Mat/BattleMato1.jpgtakes less than 3 seconds to find its PSA, while one of my (what would seem to be a stronger layout) other Battles http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h305/Roto-Mat/BattleStrong.jpg
takes almost 8 seconds. Comparing these two balls, along with their spin times, would lead me to believe that a quicker spin time would lead to a much more defined movement when reading dry boards (barring cover prep/etc).

I will try to get some pics up tomorrow of a few balls with a grease pencil outline of the ball flare when placed into the determinator at different positions.

Ok let me try to understand what your are looking for in a ball reaction. Do you want the ball to skid and then *FLIP* when it reads the dry? Or are you wanting the ball to skid and then *ARC* when it hits the dry?

Strong midlane, heavy roll, but minimum hook. The low differential planets give me the smooth backend, but not that same heavy roll through the pins.

Just wondered if any funky drilling with an asymetric ball might gimme something similar. Like pin on axis and the mb giving late revs somehow.

Dave, I have a Scorchin Inferno with the pin almost in the center of my grip, just 1/16 above, with CG down at 4:00, which is about 4 3/4 X 4 3/8, pin in ball, no hole.  This ball okay through the front, revs up heavy rolling in the middle third, but doesn't change direction fast at all, not much hook, but hits like a mother!!  Good on a long pattern, haven't really used it on light oil.

I have a Roto Horizon (Thanks Tyler) drilled pretty similar, clean through the front, lazy break point also.  Have a hard time trying to slow wheel this ball.  The straighter I can go at the pocket up the lane, this ball is good.  Kinda wish I had this ball in CC for Nationals.  Hmmm....

Horizon isn't really good on a house shot, but I really don't care about that, if you know what I mean.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but when you put a drilled ball on the determinator, wouldn't that be the prefered spin axis?  Wouldn't it be the mass bias on an undrilled ball?  Just wondering.

I took 10 balls to Corpus!!  Only took 6 into the convention center.  Storm Rolling Thunder 6 ball bag, worth every penny!!!

Threw my Vapor Zone in team.  Tried my Dynothane Energy at the beginning, 2 1/2" pin to PAP layout.  Great ball for playing out, usually a fairly strong ball for me, but went to long on this pattern.  Vapor Zone was okay.

Zone Classic in doubles and singles.  Hooked more than team, even on fresh at 7:00AM.... ugh....  600 Team, 620 Singles, 637 Doubles.  Missed two spares.

more balls aaaaahhhhh!
