Grand Illusion

Whats the verdict with this ball?

I have not read much about it yet.Is it good or just another ball?

It is a GREAT compliment to the Cell when the Cell is just too much ball.
just take a couple minutes to look in the Roto part of BR, where there is a topic about the Grand Illusion.

This ball is a winner, RG this time is starting the season with a big bang. A ball that is clean through the front, I could compare it to what i'm familar with, other RG and Storm. Its not as long as a T road pearl, and more controlable. Occasionally the t road Pearl was good but would go a little too long to carry well, this ball is there. Being a pinch earlier in the midlane and more controlable on the backend.

Overall a more versatile ball than anything they have had in there midpriced line in years. From a proshop point of view its not always about how many conditions that one ball for a customer can cover. Its about how many customers it can work for. Like the cell it works for a large majourity.

I just got my Grand Illusion this weekend and proceeded to shoot a 198 (4-9 split)-222 & 221 clean.  I was very impressed with the control of this ball.  Looking forward to working more with this ball.

15lb, 3 in pin, drilled 5X3, pin over ring.  i am lower speed, medium rev stroker.  on broken down house shot, playing third arrow, rolled up very nice to pocket with very good carry.  on fresh pba cheetah, too much ball for my speed and hand.  will try on fresh house shot soon.

Another question,How well does/would this ball handle slick lane conditions? With the middle being almost flooded at times,depending on who running the machine?

This ball is NOT designed to handle those types of conditions. The Cell handles slick and or flooded conditions.. The Grand Illusion is more for medium lane conditions..

Guys, let me tell you what, This ball is BAD A!!.  I have bowled 2 league nights with it and man, 776 and 790.  I have a Cell and have bowled with it for about 6 months but this ball is IT, especially on a house shot.  With my Cell I had a little over/under on a house shot but the Grand Illusion has none.  I have had about 4 boards both nights, had a 290 and a 279 (stone 8, solid 10) or I would have had a couple perfecto's in the bag with it.  I tell ya what, this ball is the shiz on a house shot, don't miss out!

Of course with a 2000 grit Abralon + polish, it will handle less oil than if it were sanded to 2000 grit or even 4000 grit Abralon, but who said this ball's surface MUST NEVER BE CHANGED FROM ITS STOCK SURFACE?

The ball is, from my point of view, designed to do everything every good solid resin is designed to do. The fact that RG decided to market it with a polished finish has nothing to do with its basic design. Since the Copperhead is so good sanded to 800 grit, does that mean it must never be polished? Of course not.

I'm sure the GI will handle quite a bit a "slick" or oil if sanded.

If one doesn't have a Cell, you can probably sand it to 600 or 800 grit. If you have a Cell in stock form, one could probably sand it to 2000 or 4000 grit Abralon and get a smoother, more-oil-handling ball.

Charlest, the Cell's OOB finish is 2000 Abralon. I'm guessing you meant you could take a Grand Illusion and sand it to 2000 or 4000 to get a smoother more oil-capable ball.

I could see this ball being used on a heavy oil pattern. With the right surface I have not sanded mine, but the potential is there to be a good oil ball.

Of course, the "it" I was talking about in my last paragraphis the GI.

I do recall with what stock surface the Cell came I've adjusted mine up and down, as noted in my review, and its reaction changes with each surface change.

FYI I assume the GI is polished by the factory to differentiate it from the Cell and the Illusion, a pretty good trio.

ok, tried it on the fresh house shot (short, light, clean backends). ball was too strong to play straight up 8.  moved inside 12 to 8, it rolled and carried very well as long as i maintained speed and proper hit.  if i slowed down and/or missed it, the results were not good.  so far i would say that the GI is not as release friendly as the cell (the illusion is the same way).  will report back after next week, will be playing on the scorpion pattern in the pba experience league.

With the polished finished, it requires a little more of the bowler. Scuffing it slightly with a nylon pad to remove some of the shine will make it more release friendly. Putting some games on it and getting to know the ball will help also.
