Grand Illusion questions

This post is for those who actually have the Grand Illusion (or a ball rep haha).  I want to know some opinions on how the ball reacts on shorter patterns or when your 3rd step down is just too damn strong.

I have noticed my aresenal is good, but I'm missing 2 pieces that clear the heads good and can still recover.  I'm almost positive on a 2nd dimension drilled weaker with pin up, but i want something less than that too.

this ball gets through the heads very cleanly. I can use it on a 2nd shift league for all 3 games. all i have to do is move in some as the shift goes on.

Mine is set up at 5x3 and likes the dry and short patterns. If there is any carrydown do not pull this ball out of the bag. I have never had it recover from a miss right so if you miss right it is likely to go though the 3 pin.

Mine is oob surface. Amazing recovery from mine once lanes open up a little. With a different layout and surface it could be early shift ball!

I have two GI's! One drilled pin below bridge and the other pin above the bridge. I use the pin down for earlier read and less movement at breakpoint and the pin up when I want to open the shot with a stronger move at the breakpoint!

You will find the GI will be too strong as well.  I truly believe that the GI is one of the most under rated balls on the market right now, and also one of the most versatile.

I have mine with a 5.5" pin and a flare increasing WH, this layout gives me a smooth reaction down lane, but in no way would I call it a mild ball.  I have bowled on every PBA X shot with it and there is nothing that it can't handle, and thats out of box.  But I find that the GI is more of my go to piece than something I go down to.  If your specs are correct in your profile, I would make sure that you go with a weak drill, otherwise you might find the GI sitting a little higher than you expected in your arsenal.

i could not agree more with bowlingmytmouse on this one. this is by far the most underated ball out right now. this ball works on everything for me. i have 2 as well one drilled pin in the ring finger for a smoother arc. and one drilled pin over the middle finger for a skid snap reaction. i have had a cell and a cell pearl with 3 different drills and surface changes and the GI is far superior than both of these balls . and its because of the popularity of the cell line that this ball gets overlooked which is just fine with me. but i will say this is not the ball to use for a third step down its way too strong maybe try a mars or a pluto

yada yada yada...opinions...yada yada

I have an Ebonite Gamebreaker drilled tame and that's the ball I want to replace.  I am shy-ing away from the low diff stuff b/c of inconsistent reaction on wet-dry and whippy backend.  Does the mars have these characteristics?  I was leaning towards the GI b/c of the larger core and therefor the slower change in direction.

if you're looking for a slower but continuous change of direction that can smooth out the wet/dry, you can't go wrong with this ball. i have one with a 5" pin down, with my higher rev rate, slow speed, i haven't seen anything blend out over/under reactions like the GI. even if this doesn't fit the gap or step down you're trying to fill, you'll add a good versatile ball to the arsenal.

OK FOLKS...
I ended up driling a Mars.  Haven't thrown it yet, went with a 4 3/4" pin to PAP, pin under drilling.  no weight hole (yet).

i'll throw it some tonight, i bowl double shift.  I'll put up a quick review on how it handled different volumns of oil.  I am chasing the average leader so I prob won't play around too much with it unless i have a good look.

REVIEW:
I bowl two leagues on mon night, at two different centers with two different shots and two different lane surfaces.  Both leagues are on the fresh.  First league is the hooky-er of the two with the higher friction lane-bed.  I am trying to overcome the current ave leader so i went with my goto piece and didn't try either of my two new rocks.  shot 750 and didn't gain a pin, actually lost a few.
2nd league, the slicker of the two.  I threw my new 2nd dimension most of the night, but then jumped out with the mars.  I got an unbelievable look.  I could square up, get more up the back of the ball and it rolled sweet.  Hit good too for such a small core.  This might be the best low end, light oil ball i've ever had, and i drill my fare share of balls.
