I was hoping to read some input on this also. I liked my old grand illusion also, never anything real huge with it but I do miss it at times. Mine read the mids very well but didnt hook to early or to late and never over reacted on the back part of the lane. Was probably the best benchmark ball I've had in a long time and I never even realized it. I still have mine laying around although the finger and thumb pitches are different than I'm currently using, may just have the thumb reslugged to match. Not sure what to do with the fingers, I'm not plugging and redrilling it and they aren't that much off, maybe just an eighth or sixteenth less reverse.

The Shooting Star had the same coverstock as the GI, Ultimate Vision Solid and a core with very similar specs. You'd just need to polish the SS; it's already at the 2000 grit level.

SS: http://www.123bowl.com/ball.cfm?ballid=3858 (http://www.123bowl.com/ball.cfm?ballid=3858)
GI: http://www.123bowl.com/ball.cfm?ballid=4199 (http://www.123bowl.com/ball.cfm?ballid=4199)

Although the SS is discontinued, that is recent and many places should still have them, including EBay.

Agreed with the Shooting Star.  If you are trying to make it your benchmark ball you can absolutely hit it with some polish (or Step 2) and it will do the trick.  You also may want to drill up a Rising Star.  It is a hybrid but it's overall reaction will not be much different than a Grand Illusion either.

Good suggestion. I think it's more versatile than the Shooting Star.

I just threw my new to me Rising Star, it has a lot more push than my Grand Illusion which is quite grabby when sensing dry!

It could be the surface treatment.  The Grand Illusion 4000 with Strorm Reacta Shine, Rising Star 2000 with Brunswick Factory polish which is quite pushy down the lane.

The Rising Star revs and floats the Grand Illusion revs and grabs!  The way I have them set up!

Thanks guys i appreciate all of the opinions.I am surprised that no one mentioned the shatter, though.I guess it falls right in there with the rising and shooting stars, based on the specs?

No. The Shatter is all pearl. It will not replace the solid GI.
The Shooting Star is closest, having the same coverstock & very close core specs, while the Rising star, being a solid/pearl hybrid, comes in at second.

ok thanks, charlest.I'm trying to match it as close as possible, because although it has been my best benchmark ball,it is also deceptively strong and very versatile.
