Dark Star v. Mars
« on: December 22, 2010, 01:55:28 AM »
I have a DS I''m looking to get drilled. I want to get the same type of reaction out of the DS as the mars but I was wondering how close I could get since the mars is a hybrid? Anyone ever owned the two to compare?

How did you have the Mars drilled?

The Mars Cores vs the DS are really not very close. The Mars and pluto didnt produce alot of flare in the early part of the lane. With the darkstar its common to see 3-4 inches flare for most ppl.

Expect the DS to slide more downlane than your Mars maybe, but its going to have more energy in the backend.

The Mars as a lower diff core than the Dark Star, plus the Vision cover on the Dark Star is much stronger that the Sure Grip II hybrid cover.  The core of the Dark Star will have a tendency to burn off your rotation quicker due to the higher flare potential.  You would want to use a lower flaring Pin to PAP on the Dark Star if you are trying to create a similar motion but most likely you will still find the Dark Star to be stronger. It think you will find that the Dark Star will be a great compliment to your Mars instead of a replacement.

My best guess would be pin under middle finger.

Thanks for all the insight. I think I'll try a low flaring layout and see how that works. I bowl in a couple of houses where the patterns are really short and lightly oiled so I need layouts that don't overreact in the dry and the mars was perfect for me.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have a MCP and I am looking for something for when the lanes break down.  From reading it seems the Mars Pearl and Dark Star would fit.  The more I read though, it seems that the Dark Star is actually pretty strong.  Would I be better off with the Mars Pearl?

The Mars Pearl is a international release but it very good if you can get your hands on one.  The Mars released in the US is a hybrid cover.  The Dark Star is stronger than the Mars as stated in a previous post but is still a good step down from the MCP.  There could be a pretty big gap between the Mars and the MCP so I would lean towards the Dark Star.  You could also consider a Nomad Pearl which is one of my main choices for when the heads start to break down.

The Dark Star so far for me gets good length but right now oob it snaps a little too hard on the back for what I wanted. I think I'll give it some more surface and polish over it and see what that does for me.
