Quick first observations of the Pluto
« on: June 13, 2008, 10:54:32 AM »
I got my Pluto punched up today.  I posted initially about how I wanted it to fit between my Mercury and Illusion.  After some tinkering with my Mystic and considering what else I had already in my arsenal, I changed my mind.  I am close to getting the Mystic to fit that spot; just needs a bit more tweaking with the cover.

Instead I decided to try and fit the Pluto between my Cell and Illusion.  Basically my arsenal now stacks up like this from "strongest" to "weakest".

Low pin Epic (OOB)
High pin Cell (1000 Abralon)
Low pin Pluto (2000 plus polish)
Low pin Illusion (OOB)
High pin Mystic (don't ask)
High pin Mercury (1000 plus polish)

The Pluto has the pin under the ring finger with a very low x-hole.  I put a coat of Ebonite Factory Finish polish on top of the 2000 Abralon box finish.  From just a couple games I can tell I am going to love this ball.  It might even push my Cell out of my bag.  It clears the heads effortlessly due to the weak core.  It picks up nicely in the midlane.  The thing that impressed me the most was the move on the back.  It was quite a bit stronger and more angular than I expected.  I did not throw the Cell or Epic to compare but I did throw the other 3 balls.  It was smoother off the spot than the Illusion while being earlier and more continuous.  It could be a great ball to go to when the Illusion starts to get erratic and the Cell is starting too soon.  I was leaving a load of ringing 10 pins with it, so I made a 4-2 move right and started killing the hole.  It gave me all the room I wanted to the right but not as much hold as the Illusion.  So far I'm pretty impressed, especially considering the price of the ball.

The only thing you will need to notice about the Pluto is that it is the best ball for the money on the market hands down.

I like the setup of your current arsenal with 3 solids(2 pin low, 1 high) and 3 pearls(2 pin high, 1 low)
Not to get off subject, but how well do the high pin mystic and low pin illusion compliment each other? I carry a 5 ball arsenal and am looking for something pearl that's a little stronger and more continuous than the mystic, as i'm not 100% sold yet on the street rod.

Currently carrying:
Low pin cell
high pin Troad solid
Low pin street rod pearl
high pin mystic
high pin neptune

I'm pretty happy with the way things are in my arsenal now with the various pins and coverstocks.  Once I get the Mystic just right and the Pluto figured out I think I'll be set.

As far as your question goes, IMO those 2 do not compliment each other very well.  They both have a very similar overall hook potential.  By all accounts the Mystic should be earlier and cover a couple more boards overall.  The Illusion should be longer and stronger off the spot.

I personally have gotten a different result.  The Illusion is what it should be.  Mine is drilled pin below ring (about 4.5 to PAP) with no x-hole.  It is clean up front and is pretty strong on the backend.  My Mystic is pin above the bridge (about 5 1/4 to PAP) and has a small x-hole in the thumb quadrant.  This ball (for me) is even longer than the Illusion (very long) and very smooth on the backend.  I would say it's a good 3 boards weaker overall, which is why I have it listed below the Illusion in my arsenal.  I can actually play in the track area during later games with it when everyone else is chasing the oil inside.  It's not what I expected from it, but it will fill the space between the Illusion and Mercury.  My Mercury is longer yet but more angular on the back.  I hope this helps some.

I've gotten a few more games on this ball now and have some more information to offer.  Saturday I used it in a tournament for a little bit.  The surface I had on it (box plus Factory Finish polish) didn't give me enough friction.  I could have gone way right but I had a much better look with my Epic.  This particular house seems to be changing the shot every week.  Some weeks it is like China, and others it plays pretty tight.  It varies pair to pair.  No biggie...that's what having an arsenal and being able to adjust is for.

After seeing that reaction, I decided to take the polish off and bring it back to 2000 Abralon.  I used it for all 4 games of my Singles league last night.  Let me say that there is no ball on the market at that price point that is better at handling a heavier medium volume of oil.  It honestly reacts like a ball that one would be expected to pay 200+ for.  The only trouble I ran into all night was when I didn't come around the ball enough (my release is normally almost straight up the back) and started leaving a boatload of 10's.  The ball holds decently on pulled shots, but where it really shines is when it finds dry boards to the outside.  I kept testing the waters to the right and couldn't really miss.  As long as I came around it well it was money.

This ball is so good that I think I will finally retire my beloved Epic.  It has been plugged and resurfaced so many times that I almost feel guilty.  It's not even really round anymore.  The Pluto doesn't handle as much oil, but that's what my Cell and adjusting my line is for.
