how does this arsenal look?
« on: August 03, 2012, 09:09:04 PM »
Alright - the fall/winter season is very close. I'm looking to tweak my arsenal. I will be bowling on wood lanes in 2 different leagues ( same house ) and synthetic on 1, possibly another.
Current arsenal is:  DEFIANT   ---- CRITICAL THEORY --- RISING STAR ------ Crossroad ---- Resurgence Revival

I will be adding the ---- BERSERK -- SHATTER -- I want to stick with Roto so the Resurgence will be sold.  I will probally sell the Crossroad as well because it does not match up well with my style. If anyone  has thrown the Berserk or Shatter, I would love to here what you have to say about them. thanks for your input.

Looks like you have the medium and heavy volumes covered, why not try the new scream for lower volumes, and wood lanes.

I had picked the Shatter, mainly for lower oil volumes and for the wood lanes. Due to my higher ball speed  (16-17mph), I thought the Shout /Scream may not be able to recover for me, that is why I am going with the Shatter.

Interesting response. You must play on a fairly good volume of oil regularly, because I don't consider 16-17 mph as  high ball speed.

If you are reading 16-17 mph at the pin deck as most people do (using the machine built into the lanes) you can be anywhere between a medium speed to high speed bowler depending on revs. and how direct you are throwing the ball.  If you are a high rev. guy swinging the ball inside out 16-17 at the pin deck is pretty high speed. off you hand is most likely around 21-22 mph.  If you are a stroker playing up the track getting to the pin deck at 16 you are letting go off your hand approx. 18 mph. and you are a medium speed bowler.

As far as the arsenal is concerned you are saying Defiant, Critical Theory, Berserk, Rising Star, and Shatter.  The only thing I would have done differently is to have a medium solid for a different roll - maybe a Shooting Star.  Otherwise It is fairly well balanced.

It's all about rev rate vs speed. If he's rev challenged, then that's pretty fast.

I had picked the Shatter, mainly for lower oil volumes and for the wood lanes. Due to my higher ball speed  (16-17mph), I thought the Shout /Scream may not be able to recover for me, that is why I am going with the Shatter.

I now have the all ROTO arsenal as stated above.  The Berserk and Shatter are very impressive. I just picked them both up this past Monday, so I am still learning how to play them. I can tell you that the Shatter is stronger than I thought it would be, meaning once it hits the dry it makes a strong move, but not uncontrollable- and it does Shatter the pins. I did think about the Shooting Star, but I prefer hybrids or pearls. Regarding the speed, according to the qubica monitor I was mostly around 15.23 - sometimes down to 14.83 and up to 16.24 -keep in mind I was experimenting with the way each ball would react. my question is how accurate are the scorers?  and when do they read the mph? my guess is at the pindeck? I would say that I play more down and in, but I can also play a tweener type of shot as well depending on the lane conditions.---- Bottom line - I believe my line up will get the job done!

They aren't here is one of the better ways to figure ball speed.

Instructions

1
Give your stopwatch to a friend. Have him start the timer as soon as you release the ball.

2
Record the amount of time it takes for the ball to make contact with the pins after the release.

3
Divide the number 60 by the number of seconds the stopwatch recorded (the bowling lane is 60 feet long). For example if the stopwatch shows 3 seconds between your release of the ball and the ball's contact with the pins, you would divide 60 by 3, thus getting 20. This number, 20, is the number of feet your ball traveled in 1 second.
