Hyper Cell or Defiant Soul?
« on: January 14, 2014, 02:37:35 PM »
Okay, just getting back into bowling after 10 years and just ordered up a HyRoad for my medium oil ball.  Now I'm already looking for a heavy oil ball with more backend snap.

Hyper Cell or Defiant Soul?

Main reason I ask is it seems the Soul would be a little later and snappier based on the cover and 4000grit finish but the comparions on RotoGrip site seem to indicate the opposite?

Is the Hyper more forgiving and versatile than the Defiant Soul?  Is the 2000 grit OOB finish and stronger cover actually more flippy than the Soul?

Backend snap happens more with medium-light oil balls as they conserve energy more.
The Soul has a hybrid cover where as the Hyper Cell has a solid cover with additives. I love the way the Soul rolls for me, but I also have a Cell ball and I feel like the Nucleus core is more versatile. If you have higher ball speed and a lower rev rate go with the Hyper Cell. If you have slower ball speed and/or lots of revs go with the Soul.

I say the Cell core is more versatile because I can play a deeper inside line or play a tight outside line. With my Soul that is setup similar I have a harder time playing a deep inside line and need to stay more direct

I have both....drilled similar....I find the Hyper Cell to be more rolly although very continuous and not have the back end movement the Soul has. The HC is way stronger in the front of the lane and will handle more oil. The Soul is much more versatile and stronger on back of lane. Depends on what you are throwing it on. I changed my HC surface to true 4000 and it is still stronger over all and in the front of the lane, my Soul is at a true 3000. Both are great balls, but I will not be able to use my HC on the THS I see as it burns up.

Can't speak to the Hyper Cell as I am not lucky enogh to have picked one up yet.  But, I agree that the Defiant Soul is a great in the oil and it is very strong to snappy off the dry for me.

I have been playing around with surfaces ranging from 1500 polished, 4,000 and 2,000 to increase it's predictability on the back end.   I love the balls strength but I will also say it is very condition specific.

I'm average speed and revs.  Would like something that will slide through the front but not necessarily burn out if it hits the dry to early.  Guess I'd like to handle heavy oil well but also be somewhat forgiving as it dries up......I know, asking a lot.

So I'm reading that the cell cover is stronger than the soul even with the same finish.  What about the core?  Does the cell have a stronger core too?  Wonder how the cell would do with polish and a toned down cover?

The Hyper Cell is the rebirth of the Cell line. There have been quite a few balls in years past with the Cell name.
Being a guy in the middle you should be good going with the Defiant Soul and you can adjust the surface to 2000 if you really see a lot of oil

For what you are wanting, I think the Soul is the better choice. The HC is very very strong. Its a great ball but not going to be as flexible as the Soul. I didnt find it condition specific unless there was no oil in the front. I think the HC will be more condition specific because of the cover. I really liked my Soul a lot.
