Hyper Cell? Need a new ball... Getting back into league play
« on: January 29, 2014, 03:51:18 PM »
I'm looking for any help or suggestions I can get. I'm new to the forum scene, so let me know if my question would be better served in another area.

After a long two years of being out of town, I'm able to get back into league play on my local lanes and am looking for a new ball to throw.

My current arsenal of balls are in order I typically bring them out of the bag:

1) Lane #1 - Big Curve - most consistent smooth arcing hook
2) Lane #1 - Supernova - strongest reaction and backend
3) Brunswick - C-system 3.5 - hardest hitting, weakest hook
4) Brunswick - Inferno (old faithful, ha) - have had for over 10 years, ball i learned on!

I don't know all the terminology very well yet, but I've asked my local pro shop to drill each of these balls pretty aggresively as I like to throw with more revs and speed rather than slow my arm motion down, where I lose consistency. My guess is that I throw around 19 mph with 350-400 revs from watching some videos online.

Right now with my supernova I'm throwing from the second dot on the left and usually thrown out to somewhere between the second and third arrow from the right. On nights where there is a little more oil I have trouble getting my ball to come back to the pocket even if I move my feet significantly to the right with my approach.

I'm looking at getting the hyper cell for nights that I need a stronger ball and can rely on the ball to make it back to the pocket without slowing my throw down.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Elimeno Pee - Thanks! one question for you.

What kind of line are you typically throwing with that speed and rev?

feet 12 boards left of center, ball crosses around or just left of 3rd arrow, out to break point at reflection of the top of the 10 pin.  i play on wood, with a relatively heavy ths.  on dryer days, it plays further left at feet / arrows, or further out, and never gives up the ability to come back.

Thanks man, with my throw being a little faster/higher rev, i think it'll give me the line to the pocket I'm looking for. I always stress when trying to pick a new ball though.

by the way, i can flatten the hyper cell out and have no issues covering a 10 pin too, it is a very versatile ball

Elimeno Pee - Good to know, threw a 288 and 289 in the month of January because I had to move to a straighter shot and left a ringing 10 on the 11th shot both times. That's when I decided I needed a stronger ball in my bag and soon. More than likely will be picking one up this weekend. Much appreciated

Hoping to get a few other's responses on this topic before I jump the gun though.

Don't know if you are looking for just roto grip, but, if you want a strong ball that rolls great on heavy to med/heavy, save yourself some money and check out the pyramid chosen path (solid or pearl).  I have several different mfg. in my current arsenal and can say this ball is a beast!

I'll definitely take a look. I'm open to options and suggestions, just had liked what I was seeing from the hyper cell, so figured I'd inquire more on here about it.

thanks!

I also have a Hyper Cell pin up drill. The ball is smooth with a strong arch, and hits hard. Keep in mind, being as aggressive of a solid that is is, when the oil dissapears, the ball will burn up. So depending on how many balls you want to get, you might also want to check out the Defiant Soul, it is a hybrid that is also very strong and will be a bit more versatile on many shots. Don't get me wrong the HYPER CELL is great, but the SOUL rocks as well too.

Soul is awesome so pissed I sold mine. The Disturbed is also very strong and a bit more forgiving. The hyper cell is great as long as you know when to put it away. If you are using in ths I would not drill it too strong. Mine flares over 7 inches and burns up easy on my ths league.  Great on a lot of volume.

One concern I see is you say your 3.5 is the weakest hooking, that's a super string cover, probably not seeing enough oil for it which makes me wonder about Adding a heavy oil super cover like the Hyper Cell.

I guess I need to study up more before I go after a new ball then. A majority of the time I'm bowling on a oily THS, but I tried a sport pattern league and nothing in my bag was hooking enough to where I had a comfortable throw. I'd get a few good pocket hits, but it was only when I slowed my throw down to like 14-15 and then my arm goes all over the place. Average went from 215 on a THS to 160's on the sport patterns. (The alley did 3 weeks of each) Never really had any luck with any of the balls I currently own. Mainly looking for something in my bag that if I have a day where I want to stand left and throw right, I won't be afraid of it not coming back to the pocket.
