For those of you that have thrown both the Idol Pro OOB and the Idol Pearl with a little surface .... are they much different?

I haven't tried the Pearl with surface . . and I think the Idol Pro is still going to be earlier and smoother . . but maybe not by much.  I'm actually not sure.

Never had much luck putting surface on pearls, beyond knocking off the factory shine.

Depends on how much surface. My buddy carries his Idol Pearl at 2000 (at the highest, sometimes taken to 1000 depending on what he's facing). The Idol Pro was a little cleaner and faster downlane. With that being said, I'm sure you could have enough separation between the two.

I put the Storm factory 4000 (500/2000/4000) on the Idol Pearl.  It took it from a barely usable ball to the first rock out of the bag in my THS league.  I think my 20' of tilt forces me to use some surface more than most.
