Illusion Mini Review

I threw the Illusion for the first time at the weekend, but only a few shots due to the pattern hooking too much… so got it back out on Monday during league.  The pattern was a little heavier, but I was quite impressed.  This is a midline ball, but doesn’t roll like it.  You can “feel” the Higher RG core limiting the revving up a little, however the midlane reaction is still very noticeable, and on the back end the ball makes a hard turn and gets into a very heavy roll into the pins.  First game out of the bag I shot 258 with a 9pin and a 10pin left only.  By the end of the second game I was having a little trouble getting good length, and after a couple of not so pretty splits, I picked up something with more length.

I’m looking forward to using this on a heavier pattern.  The ball is much stronger than I thought, however does not seem like the core is under powered for the cover, which is something I have found with other strong midline balls.  The ball made a bigger move on the back end and covered more boards overall than the Ebonite NVS with a similar drilling – I was impressed.

I’ll get some video footage online ASAP.

You don't think the NVS is a strong ball?

I've drilled 4 of them and all are very strong.

I think it's best just to ignore toomanytenpins, according to him nothing hooks and everything is garbage.

ragnrk, how do you mean the comparison was innapropriate?

I only compared the two balls, because these were the only 2 balls i threw all night, and "stepped down" to the NVS after using the Illusion for 2 games.

I read that post that was linked, and i guess it is just the same in that some players will ask for something to "hook lots in heavy oil", but the best drilled in the world cannot make the most agressive ball in the world turn the corner for some that puts one rev on the ball...

I would agree with toomanytenpins that a ball in the hands of a pro is different to the same ball in the hands of a once a week league player, however it is the same ball, therefor it is not the ball that is not working...

If i'm reviewing a ball and i compare it to another ball in terms of the amount it hooked, i'm basing that on the ball being used on the "right" condition, and thrown with a decent amount of hand.

A dull particle ball used on light oiled lanes will most likely cover less boards than a highly polished pearl, where as on a very heavy oil shot, the dull particle ball may hook 6 boards, while the pearl hooks 1.

Hey Ryan,

I have to admit I was confused by Ragnrk's post too, but I think when he is saying "...his experience with the NVS" he is meaning toomanytenpins, not you.  

E.G.   "Well, according to toomanytenpins experience with the NVS, I guess Ryan's use of the NVS for an example is inappropriate."

I think that is what Ragnrk was trying to say.  The quote from the other article that made it clear for me was....

So I think the long/short of it is you have a fine comparison between the NVS and the Illusion!

rag you should definitly look into the illusion, it really is a lot of ball, and not only for a midline ball...

Going to a tournament this evening on the Scorpion Pattern, which is apparently pretty heavy oil, so I am interested to see how the illusion stacks up on it!

I used the Illusion at the start on the scorpion, but it was a little to strong.

The centre the pattern was down in is normally best shot from the gutter, on any patter, and this was no different.  I was dissapointed as, from reading about the pattern, i expected it to play inside, which is a stronger part of my game.  Couldnt get a good look with anying in practice, then thre my MTX (the urethane blem type) and had a good look.  Drilled the pocket the front 5 and left 4 10-pins, so moved... didnt get a good look all evening, and even had one game with SEVEN large splits... I wasnt impressed...
