Pluto quick impressions
« on: December 24, 2007, 05:20:44 AM »
Well i went out today and threw the Cell again and was impressed of the backend move of this ball. But more importantly i threw Pluto drilled 4 1/2 pin to pap and cg below about 3 1/2 inches stacked above the ring with no weight hole.

I must say this ball is one of the best cheap balls i have ever thrown, if you are fairly accurate you will be amazed of the pure power this ball will produce. If you miss well let's just say it will not make pocket on at medium oil and strike, you will pay for it. I see recovery happening on light oil but on medium's the ball will let you play up the boards and from the gutter in.

I was liking the control of the ball and when i made good shots the hit was explosive to say the least, i had two guys come throw the ball and same thing just explode the pins with not a ton of hook.

So if you like being square and wanting a ball that let's you play straight and not be killed with taps from being straight this one of the best balls you could choose.

I thought my driller was nuts for even suggesting that the Pluto would be a good fit for me, well again Jeff from K & K Bowling services was dead on with his layout and call.

If you ever liked the seafoam Tornado solid from years ago this ball is a must have for medium to lighter patterns, it take hand position changes well and let's you change angles from outside.

I went old school with my Pluto to see what it can do if drilled strongly.  Pin 3 3/8 x 3 with low hole 6 3/4" from center of grip at 45* angle.

I have to disagree slighty with mrbowlingnut.  My Pluto box was suprisingly strong (but I also think the Neptune is sleeper strong).  Threw it on a fresh house shot with a little carrydown.  This particular house shot has quite a bit of push for a wooden house.  Odyssey, Mystic and Quest can be used with 2000 grit easily, even for higher rev guys but you still have the dry outsides to bump against.

The Pluto Covered quite a few boards, especially in the middle and backend part of the lane.  Hit was extremely good.   Recovery was also good even when missing slightly in the oil.  If you've seen how strong the Neptune can be, this is an earlier and smoother version.  I think the Pluto box may be a little too strong for lighter oil unless your rev count is low.  But I see it as being a great piece for those lighter volume or broken down fresh shots when you need push through the mids.

I really like the option of  having a solid piece that I can drill with a very strong pin and not have to worry about early hook.  I'll be drilling the Cell on Wednesday and hopefully getting a few comparison shots (I know you've heard that before )

My problem with he comparison to the Seafoam Green Tornado was that while the 15 lb worked great for me, the 16 lb, with the EXACT same drilling, sucked goose eggs. Now, THEORETICALLY, manufacturers researchers set the RG and the Differential for different weight ball so that they give the same ball reaction. Obviously, in my case, that is not so.

So, I worry what the ball reaction for the Pluto will be in 16 lb vs 15 lb versions of the core.

I wonder such that I am not willing to gamble, even with a $90 ball.

Note I love the idea that the Saturn is finished at 2000 grit while the old Saturn was finished at 800 grit (din't liek that idea so much).

Anthony C.,

I have seen the Neptune drilled weak and drilled strong. Basically, those two drillings make the Neptune into 2 virtually COMPLETELY different balls. Ask Mark Curran for cofirmation.

Hmmm I solid reactive with for medium to lighter conditions? Sounds interesting.

The Neptune was stupid strong for what it was supposed to be, drilled mine pin up 5" and it was every bit as strong as my Thunderstruck Pearl with the same drilling.

But then again I'm a freak, I make weak equipment hook, and strong equipment go straight...

You're right.  I have a Neptune with a 5.5" pin and another with a 4" and they are two different beasts.  For me, it's much easier to get separation with lower flare balls.

Regarding 15 vs 16.  I know some balls like the Silver Streaks were significantly different between 15 and 16, but the Neptune's are not.  I experimented with 15 over the summer and the Neptune I had was identical to the 16.

The Pluto does cover enough boards and guy's that slow hook or have the rev rate will be able to get deep with it on medium's imo. I have no tilt and medium rev rate with medium-high speed so for me the ball like any ball has to be played direct with not much belly to it.

I know guys who could hook anything and i suspect it would square them up a little also, The Cell opens up the shot more it will allow guys like me to move a few boards in and higher rev guys to really get in on medium and oily shots.

My comparision to the seafoam is the best ball out of the zillion i have owned that gave me the same look, rarely does a straight ball come along for me that produces the hitting power i am already seeing from the Pluto.

I might have to get a Saturn if it is really strong and see how that fares, i have a pro pin saturn but i think the Pluto is a bigger hooking ball with the super long pin to pap on the saturn.

Btw i had an Illusion with me also, it was alot straighter than the Pluto so if that helps anyone out. Remember for 4 more weeks i bowl at a hole that plays weird, before moving to a much easier house shot that any ball will work on that is for mediums on down. I bowl on oil that holds up, unless there is 8 guys on it in the same area then it will open up halfway through the 3 rd game.

So maybe this cover is alot stronger mix than advertised, my diablo the other night would not even hook in the same house. But at most houses here in vegas it is a pretty strong ball that i carry alot.

Barry,

Since the Pluto comes at 2000 grit and the Saturn comes at 800 grit, you may want to re-surface any Saturn to 2000 to level the playing field.

Me too, it is called getting a handful of it and not fluffing it.
