I find I am using my Sonic X more and more around here - as the oil shortage continues. I really like the ball, but I need a "go to" ball - because sometimes the Sonic X is just too strong...

I like Roto Grip - but since the 1970's, have only had the one ball. Any suggestions about something that will be a little weaker than my Sonic X?

The Mercury is ball of choice. If you have any questions just ask Rich or Gary at Valley we have drilled up a few of them.

please explain how the Mercury can be made a FULL degree weaker in oil handling ability than the sonic-x pearl??
i mean besides polishing it to 10,000 grit and putting the pin in the track. not even sure that would do it.

I dont' know that much about RG equipment, but I did notice a whole bunch of Mercurys going back into the bag about the time my Sonic X came out. Unfortunately, I only saw the bags - not the guys who were using the equipment, so I couldn't ask what they went to.

I agree with Ryan the Mercury is weaker than the Sonic X. I would guess charlest has not thrown both balls.

Beg pardon!
I have the Sonic-X pearl; already on my 2nd drill. Had the Sonic-X solid too, and will be seeing a friend's Mercury soon. The cover on the Mercury is not weaker and the core on the Mercury has larger Rg differential than the Sonic-x. I just don't see it ... yet.

I'm inclined agree with Mumzie: The Sonic can probably be a goto ball when the Mercury is too early or too much.

Roto Grip's parent company Storm has the Red Sparkle Hit, that's definitely weaker than the Sonics or Mercurys.

I have a Dry/R - it's pretty weak. But on not quite dry lanes, it's hit leaves something to be desired. I was hoping that RG would have something - but since disagreement seems to be the only agreement on this thread, I guess I'll look somewhere else.

Thanks to the guys who were honestly trying to help - maybe the Mercury will work - I'll talk to a guy I know here who's on RG staff - next time I see him.

I have used a Sonic X, but not the Mercury. Looking at the information available, the Sonic X may have a stronger backend than the Mercury. So in that sense the Mercury would be a little weaker from the Sonic X. If you truely want to step down from the Sonic X you may have to go to a reactive ball with pancake weight block. If you want a two piece core you could try to find a discontinued Monster Slay R.

I got a Mercury punched up today. I didn't get to throw it too much, but I've got an idea now. I never had a Sonic X, so I cannot compare the 2. What I can tell you is that the Mercury has very good length, and a hard backend. It wasn't a snappy reaction. I was suprised by the amount of hook it had on the backend. These of course are initial observations after just 1 game with it. The hit and roll reminds me of a ball that should cost twice as much...the hit is outstanding. I had it drilled 5.5x4, no weight hole.
