Looks like Roto missed the boat...
« on: June 21, 2009, 12:49:29 PM »
Its been awhile now since the Rogue came out. I'm looking around and I only see a few in my local tours. Everyone and the grandmother has a Virtual though. Whats the reason? Did Roto just miss the boat and the virtual got into people's bags first, or are people having trouble with the Rogue. I'm loving mine. First day out with it I threw 267 a junior gold pattern.

Probably a good assessment on your part, Locke. I think Virtuals just got into everyone's bag first. I know in my neck of the woods, people throw Vituals on anything.....hevy oil, medium oil, dry, they don't care!

And it's not like the ball is that versatile. To me, it's pretty condition specific. But so is the Rogue!

Frankly, I would probably only throw a Rogue in tournament play, or PBA experience league play.

QFT

My PBA league gives us choice of any 1 Cell ball or 2 AZO balls, and from asking around almost everyone is going to choose the Rogue. Got mine about 5 days ago, and put 20 games on it so far. Waaaay to much ball for me right now @ OOB. Should be useful when we get to play on the longer PBA patterns, though. I'll play with the surface, as usual, so see what I can get out of it.

Bonus: The ball doesn't seem to soak up very much oil.

I see the same thing as well. they throw VG's on conditions that call for a dry lane ball and wonder why the ball isnt hooking. they all must be buying it to be like everyone else... but most of them also have about 100 revs and almost spin the ball.

i guess they figure the virtual miracle is a better choice then getting coached?

I still see way more OG Cells and Cell Pearls than Virtuals.  As for Rogues, I heard the House owner/pro shop guy where I bowl never heard about it, so he doesn't even have one on display, lol.

Besides, you can't compare the Virtual Gravity and the Rogue (solid vs hybrid).  I know it's not exact but to me the OG Cell = VG, Rogue = Virtual Energy.  The Cell came out before the VG and the Rogue came out before the VE.

I don't think that Roto-Grip missed the boat on anything, but that's just my opinion.

The Cell is not even close to the movement of the VG. Comparing apples and oranges there. Also the same with the Rogue and the unreleased VE.

Don't let the hybrid cover fool you. The Rogue Cell is the regular Cell with a more agressive backend move ala Virtual Gravity. The Cell is very smooth with a strong cover which is unlike just about any ball on the market.

VE is just getting into staffer and Star pro shops hands, so the verdict is out on that one so far.

I believe the Rogue was released before Roto Grip got on the bling bandwagon. They will likely not repeat the mistake - it is still a very good ball - just not distinctive enough for anyone to say for sure which Cell a PBA player was throwing on the show. It is hard to sell bowling balls off a TV appearance if no one can tell what it is without reading the logo - IMHO

You guys must be crazy. the cell was great but worked when there was enough volume in the heads and downlane. the cell pearl worked when the heads started to fry a little bit, and then the rogue, it smooths out the front and mids, and then just tears up the backend. For customers that find the virtual was too angular or too early the rogue is such a good choice.

the VG didnt impress me on the release and now that ive seen many people throw it, i believe because it has a storm logo on it thats the only way it sold so much, it seems to be a really big speed ball, i have thrown one and ill take my Cells over it any day

the rogue cell is a great ball and even before it came out, it helped Danny Wiseman get to the championship match in the Masters

Ha, ha! These are all excellent points.

In terms of what do I like? I'll take the Cells of any kind, any day! They are just more predictable and consistent than a VG......period. Besides, the VG is wayy too angular in my opinion.

Case in point. We bowled summer league last Thursday. Guy on the opposing team pulled out a brand new VG, and started tearing up the lanes. He threw the first 6 in a row. We were on medium oil, with a little heavier concentration in the middle. If the ball got anywhere near the pocket....he struck!

He then proceeded to miss a ten-pin spare, a 7-pin spare and a 6-10 spare. He closed out the 10th with a meager 190! He couldn't read the break of his VG downlane. More than likely operator error.....but I did notice a discernible wiggle in the ball, anytime he crossed the middle of the lane.

Give me a Cell, CP or Rogue.....period!

Well, it would appear that it was a business decision on this one here. Storm followed Roto on the first 2 Cells so they went with the storm release first this time. After the Cell Storm had the dimension as an equivalent, the it was Cell Pearl the 2nd dimension. Both times the Cell sold a lot more. I have to think that they figured the Cell would be able to sell based on name without being the first on the market... Its too bad. The way I have seen the VG roll, it is very good for the low rev to medium rev bowler to throw. The high rev bowlers I have seen throw the VG tend to have some issues with controlling it from time to time. The Rogue seems to be a little more stable off the spot than the VG and therefore is a lot better for high rev players in my experience. But that is just a thought.
