Mars Video
« on: December 18, 2009, 03:39:28 AM »
Since their has been quite a few threads on the Mars and not a lot of videos, we decided to do a video for it.  This was shot on 38 THS that we threw on for a hour or so to help illustrate how the Mars reacts once a pattern is broken down.

That is a really good look. I have been having so much trouble with my Mars. I'm going to try to bring it to 4000 grit. It was just skating with the factory finish on it... I'm looking for exactly the look you are looking for.

I have found with most of my RG stuff that hitting it lightly w/ scotch brite to keep a little surface on it really helps. Everything I have from them (Cell, R Cell, Mars & Pluto) clear the heads really well. They actually get a little squirty on the backs once they glaze up, which is why I scuff them a little. Don't go nuts, just very lightly. This has especially helped with the Mars & Pluto.

The First one I drilled, I used a weaker layout (60x5x35) and pretty much saw the same thing your describing.  I took it down to 2000 and it rolled great but kinda defeated the purpose of what I was looking for in this ball.  So I decided to drill this one and it rolls absolutely awesome.  It is extremely versatile and can be used on many types of patterns.

Your ball reaction looks really great.  I'm thinking of getting a Mars to go under my Nomad Solid for when the heads are shot.  Think that would be a good idea?  BTW, were the heads pretty dry in the video?

Also, what is the equivalent of your 50 x 3 x 65 layout in inches, and what is the pin buffer?  I'm not sure what the markings mean that you have on the ball (it looks like 3 x 3 x 2.5), if that is the layout in inches or not.  Also, what is your ball speed (either at the pins or off the hand) in the video, since it appears to be a lot faster than mine (14 - 14.5 at pins)?  Thanks.  Any layout info is greatly appreciated.

I use dual angle layouts for my equipment.  The first number (50) is the drill angle, second number (3) Pin distance from PAP and the last number (65) is the VAL angle.  Basically would come out to 3 x 2 with a 2.5 inch buffer. My ball speed during that video was right around 19 (launch speed).  The heads were not burnt in the video, we didn't spend enough time on the lane for that.  Basically the lanes were similar to what I would see the last game of a 4-man league.  Without seeing your game, making a recommendation for you is difficult.  The Mars however is a great ball to go underneath a Nomad, don't be afraid to use a stronger layout.

Hey Jimmy, most of your releases that I can see on all your videos (Mutant, Nomad, Mars) almost look like you come up the back of the ball unless you are playing a deep inside line and swinging it.  Is that a pretty standard release for you?  I have been working on my hand positions to give myself a different look and I noticed with my Rogue that I get a better reaction when I come up the back of it with a more direct line, coming around the side I get a pretty bad over/under reaction.  Just curious.

this mars is drilled rico and goes pretty long with a smart move to the pocket. i love this controlled reaction, thats why its my go to ball on broken down patterns or short patterns.

I do prefer to stay up the back of the ball as much as possible.  It allows me to control the back part of the lane better.  On a league shot you can do pretty much anything you want to, but when you bowl on tougher patterns staying up the back of the ball keeps the ball in play better.  As you migrate left you have to start using side rotation to get the ball to change direction if you are keep your break point the same.  However if you are using parallel moves you can stay up the back of the ball more, because your break point is moving left. It is a good thing to be able to do both.
