Mars vs Hy-Road

I have a Hy-Road drilled 4 1/4" from my PAP, pin over ring finger. I have a Mars coming in tomorrow, do not know the pin length or top weight. If it was a shorter pin, I was going to drill it 5" from my PAP, pin under middle finger. If I am able to do this, would this be a good step down from the Hy-Road and a good step up from my Slate Blue Gargoyle which is 4 3/4" from my PAP, pin up? Or would there be too much of a gap between the Hy-Road and Mars? Hy-Road is currently 3000 (Valentino pad) and polished with Snake Oil. Any input is appreciated.

Not sure what your ball speed is, but judging ONLY from the BTM review of the Mars (and what I have seen of the core from the Pluto and the Neptune), the Mars seems fairly close to my SBG. My SBG, drilled not too differently from yours, needs almost medium-light oil to clear the heads. Pearl urethanes do not get a lot of length and this core is not weak. I don't think I'll be getting a Mars, mostly because, unless I see or hear differently from the BTM review, it's too weak a ball. My SBG and others cover what it can cover.

With the finish and polish you have on your Hy-Road, it hsould be identical to the stock finish. Their 1500 grit is US graded. Valentino's 3000 pad is P3000 grit or 1500 grit US, the stock grit level. Snake Oil has no abrasive, so when applied, it doesn't change the surface grit. But the final result depends on how you applied it.

The Mars is a hybrid type cover. It is also not a weak ball like I have read. I have mine drilled pin above ring cg swung out some and on a THS this ball shines.

I had a Hy-Road drilled very similar to the Mars and there was a 2-3 board difference in hook, but not that much. I also had a SBG and the Mars is MUCH more ball than it ever was.

I would consider the Mars a good medium oil ball. It can handle some oil, but not a lot and it's also probably too strong for the really drier conditions.

Comparable? probably, in that Mars and the Planet series are for medium-light to medium oil for the average hand people, just like the Vibes. (The Neptune can be tweaked for light oil I'm not sure but I don't think any of the Vibes can be made to handle that little oil, mostly because they all already come 4000 grit and polished.)

In my opinion-
But it (the entire Planet series) is very different in concept, because they use high RG cores with very little flare, depending on the coverstock's strength for 90% of the ball's power.

Vibes have normal/average cores. That makes their drillings have more potential effect on the ball's rections, making them more versatile in general.

I have yet to see a mars thrown, however i do know a number of people who've recently drilled up a Hy-Road, the Hy-Road has been very strong down the lane. A couple of them have been choosing Hy-Roads and selling their cell pearls (luckily to me :-) If it was me I would drill the Mars similiar and adjust the cover to fit the gap for you.
