cell with polish
« on: January 30, 2010, 11:42:38 PM »
I have a chance to pick up a NIB Cell very reasonably. I bowl on THS. I have a high rev rate and use primarily polished pearl reactives or a Liberator (solid urethane with a core) at 4000 with no polish. I've seen the Cell in the hands of lower rev rate bowlers be an absolute beast. I haven't seen higher rev guys like myself use one polished. I know it will take polish well, but will it react well? I am looking for length and arc with carry. Thoughts?

Be very light with polish and light with pressure. Does not take too much to get a high gloss.

I have a Cell 1500+polish that is great on a THS. I am a high rev player at around 375 RPM and 17.5MPH at release. I just threw 713 last week with my polished Cell. It works amazing. But try to put a little weaker drilling on it as well. Even polished that cover is strong.

i used my friends cell that was polished with some "secret polish" as he liked to call it. not to be mistaken by Beans Secret Sauce. its my friends way to be "cool" i guess you can say. but man did that ball kick in the back. it was drilled fairly strong. i have about a 300 rev rate and throw it around 16-17 mph. thinking about getting one myself and trying the "secret polish"

Thanx for the replies. I have been itching to try out a cell, but I was afraid that it would be to stong to use.

I have a cell with the 2000 abralon OOB finish on it and my rev rate and speed are spot on with yours.  I bowl on high friction wood lanes and the ball is perfect for the first two games in league, then I have to switch to my cell pearl or chainsaw.  I don't think you would need to polish it if you were to get a cell, at most perhaps going to 4000 abralon.

It's hard to say how well it would work for you without really knowing the lane conditions you'll see.  If you have enough head oil to make it worthwhile to throw, it may be a good fit.  I am a lower rev guy, but even then I still prefer my Cell with a very, very light coat of polish on it just to get a little extra length and a little more backend angle.  I went with a long but rolly drill -- It's somewhere around 5.5x4 with the pin under the middle finger.  The large pin buffer (placing the pin under my fingerline) and the mass bias being a little closer to my VAL helps the ball read the midlane and roll off the spot without being too early and too rolly, and the longer pin to PAP distance creates some length.  I like the ball with a 4000 abralon finish right over top an underlying 500 abralon surface, and then I just apply a little polish by hand to help get the ball through the heads.  The result?  A VERY versatile ball -- I've had success anywhere from boards 5 through 20 at the arrows and anywhere from 3 through 14 at the breakpoint depending on what kind of conditions I've seen.  The key though is that it does need some oil in the heads to prevent it from hitting flat.

VERY true!  Durring shadow balls a few weeks ago I tried the Cell and it was hitting flat so I had to use my pearl all night.

I would change the strength with the drill.. if you are looking for a strong arc the polish will give you length but could make it too snappy and angular on the backend..
but if you aren't getting snap with your polished pearls now you may be ok..

My pin over ring finger cell is 1k and polished(about 20-30 secs on each side with Motiv).  Used it on a 40 foot THS (lane guy puts a lot of oil from 6 to 6) today and it arc''''d on the back end and had a lot of pop.  I was playing playing a small swing from 10 at the arrows to 8 at the break point and I liked the reaction.  My friend was watching me and told me on one shot the ball was slightly half pocket and the 6 pin drove in the 10 very hard and the 6 pin shot across and bounced off the side board at high rate of speed.  If there was a 7 pin there it would have been taken out by it.  Those were his words.  This house is known to be easy to get to the pocket but hard to carry because of the entry angle.

Hopefully, this will give you an idea what could have happen if you polish it.  Because your rev rate is high you should be okay doing that.  Lower rev players might not get the same reaction.

Looks promising. I'll report back after it's drilled up and I have some games on it.

Good luck with it.  One positive is that it's easier to clean when it's polished.  Sounds crazy but the motiv gel cleaner takes off almost all of the dirt now on the first pass.  At 2k, it took a while for the dirt to come off of the coverstock.
