Original Cell Surface
« on: January 15, 2010, 01:28:48 AM »
I was just curious what everyone is using for surface on their original Cell?

I recently purchaced one for a pretty good deal and threw it for the first time durring shadow balls at league last night.  It''''s currently at box finish (2000 abralon) and I bowl on some fairly high friction wood lanes.  It was hooking almost instantly.  Granted it''''s probably the wrong ball for the conditions and got the ball more for when I bowl elsewhere.  My Cell Pearl (4000 abralon) works well for the conditions I see durring league.

My speed is around 15mph and revs I would guess around 300.

Would it make sense to take it to 4000 and maybe putting the Pearl back to box conditions (or close to it, maybe 1000 plus polish)?

You'd be wasting your time trying to make the Cell work on those conditions if your Cell Pearl is already working well.  Why would you want them to kind of overlap?  I'd say you should use the original Cell only when you see longer and/or heavier patterns because that's where it really shines.  And for what it's worth, my Cell is drilled to be fairly "weak" and predictable (something close to 5.5x4, pin under middle finger), and even then I get my best results with sanding straight from 500 to 4000 grit, then applying a light coat of polish by hand to help clear the heads.  And it still only works when there's plenty of oil out there.  If it starts rolling early, I have to put it away and go with something that is designed to handle friction.

The original Cell''s surface was very adjustable  and it reacted well to those adjustments. If you''re using the Cell Pearl at P4000 grit matte, you can certainly use the Cell at that surface.

I also used it at 600 grit US + a non-abrasive polish, and I used it at P2000 grit + a non abrasive polish. The P2000 + polish was very skid/flip for me. The P4000 grit matte and the 6000 grit + polish were more controllable and allowed me to use it on true meidum oil.

Entirely curious - Why does everyone say "OG" when referring to the first ball in a given line? Doesn't anyone realize that "OG" was used in the 90's, meaning "Original Gangta"?

Personally I have not idea what "Original Gangta" means.

I don't use "OG" to stand for the word "original" but it seems to have become common usage here. So I accept it. If there's any doubt, I usually spell out the word in my reply, as you can see.

Anyway, I'll have to practice (if I can ever find the time) and figure it out.  I would think that the Pearl at 4000 and the Cell at 4000 would still give me two different looks on the lanes.  If OOB surface doesn't work at all for me I might play around with the surface.
