My Cell Just Isnt Moving....
« on: February 11, 2008, 05:22:57 AM »
Im not that knowledgable of layouts and the whole aspect of drilling the ball but I had my cell drilled aggressive with the pin under the ring finger. I am a high rev, high speed, bowler. Ive been bowling in a house with a extreamly walled up shot, where the insides are extreamly wet and the outsides are extreamly dry. So i figured  I could stand very far left and throw maybe a 5L and peek it out to like 15R-10R, because the outsides get so dry later on in the evening that if you spray it out early its gonna check up and go brooklyn. But I couldnt find a ball to hit from the insides, from that deep of a angle. So i kept moving right and with the amount of oil and carrydown you almost cant have any angle on your ball in the inside if you want your ball to turn around. So I was on a mission for a new ball to make that turn. Because I now have this idea that if i can get a ball to move in the inside, then anyone outside of that will make it to the pocket as well. So ill have an amazing amount of room. So ive always used pearl coverstock balls so I thought maybe a dull ball would eat through that oil with my revs.

So i purchased the Black Widow Bite. This ball is very good, but once again that ball couldnt make the turn in the inside. So i said alright screw it I want the most aggressive ball out there. I want a beast. I want a ball that will hook off my hand. So i was told to try the cell. Alot of people said I had to much hand for the cell. Well i purchased the cell. Only thing I can say is, wtf is up with this ball. freshly oiled shot, fresh backends. I stood left with it and basically threw a shot 25 to 10 to see if it would turn. The ball just sailed right and barely made a turn. I was amazed. So I was like maybe I need to get it right so it can hit some dry boards. Well i threw it right and the ball just hit the outside and then made a slight move and beaked it right through the 3 pin. So now im just confused.

Im not sure why this ball isnt moving. I left it at factory. Maybe my speed is two high, so it doesnt have time to make the turn. Or maybe its burning energy to early and losing all the energy before it hits the dry boards. But like I stated before we have ALOT of oil in the insides and on the heads so that doesnt make much sense either. Our house is also known for having sub par backends so maybe the backends arnt dry enough with my speed. Who knows. Has anyone else had any problems with the cell. It might just be my revs and speed.

Yes, if you have a chance, read my review that I posted on the Cell and let me know if what you're seeing is somewhere in the same ball park as my experiences.

All bowling balls need dry boards to move! There's probably several factors involved on why your cell or other balls won't work.  Maybe your just playing the wrong part of the lane?  Maybe there's just too much oil on the inside for any ball to make the turn?  Are you bowling on a christmas tree type pattern in which the lane is oiled longer in the middle and shorter on the outside?

I would just play a different part of the lane, maybe closer to the oil/dry line.

it's just a thought, but perhaps you should've drilled it with the pin up not down, pin down just gets the ball rolling sooner

OK, for the AVERAGE rev and AVERAGE ball speed bowler, as far as I have seen with my Cell, the Cell will handle TRUE medium-heavy oil with its 2000 grit cover and an average drilling. An average drill will be medium strength pin and MB position.

If you have high ball speed or low revs or choose to use a 5.5 or 6" pin position, then you'll need either more surface (1000 grit) or a milder drill or a lower ball speed.

The cover adjust very easily for all sorts of uses.

There are many, many ways to drill this ball. Since it has an asymmetric core, there are  many things it is capable of doing. Like for wet/drys, use a lower pin and/or place the MB closer to the VAL or the PAP.

If your driller does not know either your style AND how to drill an asymmetric core, then just ask the people at Roto-Grip. This is science and art, not magic or witchcraft'

The Cell is not a beast; it is not the most aggressive ball out there. It is an excellent ball and can be made to work in many instances to do many things. It can be a beast, if drilled right for your release. It can be aggressive, depending on the oil pattern and your release.

Maybe you just need more surface for your ball speed or this oil pattern.

There is no magic.

Whats your layout on the ball and whats your pap? No one can tell you why your ball doesn't move without that type of info. If the MB is moved far away from your thumb then the ball is going to be less hook with a controlled type layout and is just not as strong as you think it should be. Just post a link of a picture of the ball with your stats and maybe someone can help then.

How about trying to cover less boards.  My Cell handles oil very well but I have found that it does not like to cover many boards, I try not to crank on it, instead I just roll it more.  If you get it into the friction it has a nice arc to it and really rolls hard into the pins.  If you can only get the Cell to hit the 3 pin, it stands to reason that you should straighten your line. It may not be the area you normally play but give it a try, you might like it, I know I did.  It sounds like you want more of a snappy type heavy oil ball, I beleive "The Break" made by 900 Global is a snappy heavy Oil ball but the Cell isn't a snappy ball, it is more rolly and continous, won't respond as quickly to friction.

If the pin is under and the MB is far away from the thumb (assuming you have a PAP like mine in the 5+ inch range), the ball is probably flaring out and it has nothing left for the backed.

To further clarify slopsurprise's question above, measure the widest point of the flare lines and let us know what that measurement is.  For example, 1/2", 3/8", 1/4", etc.

Spiderballthrower.. I did read your review which actually made me write this section. To eveyone that is saying to throw a different line. I understand what you are saying. I can throw up the boards. Its just that, I own the Black Widow Bite, and I assumed that this ball was ALOT more then that ball. When in actualality the bite hooks WAY more then the cell.

I actually went to a few other houses to see if maybe it was a defect ball. I found out that it is actually my house. Because I went to a house that is notorious for dry backends and the ball was moving very well and hitting very hard. But I dont bowl leagues there this season, I wanted a ball for my house you know?

So my assumption is that maybe since the ball is made to roll early, it probably sits in the oil and trys to hook early, and then when it hits the backends (which are subpar at best) then there isnt enough energy or friction for it to move at all. So I was thinking of maybe getting it redrilled to go longer and maybe the energy will store farther down the lane and help eat through the carrydown.

I have no idea. Im just struggling so bad at this house, and this is the house I grew up in. Its very notorious for having horrible backends. Im talking i average 225-230 at one house and 205-210 at this house. So I basically got this ball because I assumed with my rev rate and the specs on this ball that it would eat through the carry down yet it has not.

Hm... im not very knowledgable of equipement I just go basically by specs, reviews and word of mouth. What do you guys recommend? Do you think my assumption is right? and if not what ball would you recommend for a high rev, high speed bowler looking to get past some carry down. If not then I might just box it till next year and have a nice new ball for the new season.

hey BowlingIcon2.
i too believed the postive reviews with this ball and bought one.
had the same problem you did and i am lower revs and speed.
took surface down to 500 abralon.
then it performs like i thought it should.
but another night in same house same ths it would appear to be a dud.
i have it drilled closet to the RG drilling info sheet  4 x 4  "B" layout.
can't seem to get an idea when this ball needs to be used and what i need to do release wise.

I loved mine for 10-15 games, and then I sold it used to someone for $90. This is because the ball kept shining up from lane Oil and lost its ball reaction. Dulling back to 2000 abralon did not return the ball to "dull" as it was OOB. I cleaned it religiously, and was dissapointed with how "shiny" it became, as well as it losing an arrow's worth of reaction. I have a Black Widow Bite that has a smoother surface (4000) and this ball has not "shined up" from usage, in fact after cleaning the OOB condition is always restored without having to use a Pad.

Well going with specs, reviews, etc is all good, so is your knowledge of carrydown...which means oil further down the lane...reactive bowling balls, in most cases will wait until it hits drier boards before making a move...what your describing calls for particle equiptment....or on a wet/dry condition, the reactive ball is probably burning up a bit soon which in case, slowly have the dullness taken off the ball and increase if still not satisfied
