Roto Grip announces summer lineup (with pics)
« on: June 07, 2011, 10:33:41 AM »
Hi Everybody,
Here is some detailed news (and high res pics) on the new releases.

Sword Line has a couple of new balls so should be interesting.
I'm afraid how much money I'm going to be spending this summer...

I am getting really excited for these balls. I like the idea of the 4000 grit pearl. That should do some fantastic things but I also think that cover is going to take some care. As for the Outlaw and Bandit, I am sad to see the Nomads go. I loved the old core but these balls look like fun. I am concerned we might be growing a bit of a gap between the Sword and Shield line though. Looks like these are going to be a bit stronger than the Nomads and I always felt there was a pretty big gap in performance already between the two lines. I guess I will be hoping for something to drop in below the Outlaw and Bandit in the Sword line, or more likely we will have something go over the top of the Riot with the next release in the Shield line.

I agree.  I've always liked my pearlized balls without polish as it smoothes out the transition from wet to dry a bit, while still allowing the pearl to be aggressive.  I like 4000 or even 2000 on pearl.  I know some might disagree with this, but I personally like to let the balls dull down over time with play as they tend to get much more predictable.  Once the surface comes down from the original finish a bit, it performs more consistently for me.  It looks like the Outlaw and Bandits will be decent replacements for the Nomads, but the Nomad Dagger is hanging around and that's a pretty strong ball in its own right.
The Dark Star is gone which I think is a little disappointing.  There were very few "control" weaker pearl balls out there and that was one of them.

I will put a little "theory" into this discussion... I speculate that you will see the Rising Star and Riot get another ball added to their line, a version with a stronger core and a stronger cover then what the Dark Star was. The need a "pearl" in that line, just like the other lines, a pearl, hybrid, and solid reactive. I would like to see The Dark Star cover on the NOMAD core. The Nomad Pearl went a little longer then I liked and the Dark Star was just a tad weak... I wish they could come up with a way to do special orders, like get the CELL core and get a THEORY cover on it, or take the NOMAD core and put the DARK STAR cover on it.

Man, custominzing core/covers for bowlers would be an instant breakthrough for any company. Sure, the average person would have to pay a lot more for that option, but imagine if that market opens up. Problem is that the ball companies would still have to test the RG, Diff, Int Diff numbers to ensure they pass regulations (I'm assuming this, so please correct me if I'm wrong).  But that would be too sweet.  The customer could request their own color schemes as well...

Anyone think that there could be a new solid and/or pearl release with the Neutron core that was introduced with the Rising Star?

Based on what Storm has done with the Tropical Heat and Breeze line, my guess is that Roto would do the same for their entry level line eventually.  The Rising Star is proving to be a phenomenal ball.

As of 7/20/11 on the USBC approved ball list, only the 3 current releases- Outlaw, Bandit, and Critical Theory are on the list other then the new Overseas releases like the Shining Star, etc...

The Critical Theory is already becoming my favorite ball right now... I think my fall arsenal is AWESOME!!!

Critical, Outlaw, Bandit, Theory pin down-roller layout, Theory-pin up, Infinite, Rising Star, Riot, Natural Pearl and Tropical Heat. I got the bases covered!!! Will still use the Dark Star, Mars, Neptune, and Pluto as needed for some less aggressive house and sport shot patterns...
